Measurements of atmospheric density, temperature, and wind velocity were obtained in the altitude range from 0 to 130 km using several sensors flown during a six hour period on 5 April 1978 from Kwajalein Atoll. The results from rawinsonde, rocketsonde, robin sphere, accelerometer sphere, and hypersonic sphere techniques were analyzed and the error sources associated with each technique were investigated. The measurements have been used together with a study of atmospheric variability to calculate a 'best profile' for each of the atmospheric parameters. A study of atmospheric scale sizes expected in the mesosphere was compared to the measurements and the vertical wavelengths measured were found in agreement with those predicted. These studies have also shown that regions of large atmospheric variability in the mesosphere are associated with turbulent, or unstable, layers based on the Richardson number stability criteria. Release: 1981
Genre: Atmosphere, Upper
ISBN:

Data concerning the spatial and temporal inhomogenities of atmospheric density and composition and their implication concerning the atmospheric infrared radiance are reviewed. Preliminary estimates of the variability in the radiance are presented. In addition, the range of scale sizes from small-scale variations is also considered.

A new mobile lidar was used to obtain data on the variations that occur in the high latitude atmosphere between 20 and 85 km. Data were obtained on 26 nights during the program. Standard meteorological balloon and rocket payloads also measured the density, for comparison with the lidar data. More than a thousand profiles of atmospheric density were obtained with the lidar and 20 meteorological rockets were launched. Comparisons between the lidar data and the meteorological rocket data showed generally good agreement. However, the lidar data from the February period is offset 12-14 percent from the rocket data. The March and April data, including 14 sets of overlapping data, generally agree to within 3 percent. Keywords: Lidar; Atmospheric density; Middle atmosphere; Atmospheric variations; High latitude atmosphere.
