Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a rapidly developing subspecialty of nuclear medicine which, in a very short space of time, has been shown to have a significant impact on patient management. This comprehensive and up-to-date clinical atlas arises out of the combined experience from two leading PET centres during the formative years of clinical application. It is presented as a series of `mini-lectures', illustrated by real-life case studies, clear concise teaching points and directions for further reading. In each section the authors have identified the key management issues in which clinical PET imaging can be used to good effect, selecting high-quality PET images to illustrate each important application, most especially in the field of oncology, but also in cardiology, neurology and psychiatry. They offer relevant clinical information on epidemiology, pathology and (in the case of cancer) staging methods in the chapter introductions. For each area of application, tabulated summaries of current clinical indications for PET scans and suggested algorithms are provided.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is now firmly established as an invaluable technique for diagnosing and monitoring disease. The second edition of this comprehensive clinical atlas will continue to present the combined experience of two of the world's leading PET centres as the technique has moved on from its formative years to gain established value in clinical practice. The book has been substantially rewritten to take account of the exciting developments that are occurring with the introduction of PET/CT, and new &‘state-of-the-art&’ PET/CT images are presented. The new edition continues to be presented as a series of 'mini-lectures' carefully designed for rapid assimilation, illustrated by case histories in which high-quality illustrations are supplemented by clear concise teaching points and directions for further reading. Part One provides an excellent introduction to the science and practice of PET and displays normal variants and discusses potential pitfalls. In Part Two, the applications of PET/CT in oncology are covered in detail, according to body system in order of their clinical importance. Part Three examines the applications of PET/CT beyond oncology; in neuropsychiatry, cardiology and infection. A useful additional feature is the accompanying DVD-Rom with HERMES RAPID software, which contains PET/CT cases for viewing and analysis, with cross-modality image fusion, and has been provided by Hermes Medical Solutions. This atlas is a superb guide to the use of PET-CT for the evaluation of treatment response in oncology patients based on its ability to assess tumor metabolic status. The first part of the book explains the role of PET-CT in response evaluation in different treatment settings. For comparison, overviews of the value and limitations of CT alone, PET alone, and anatomical and functional MRI are included. Guidance is also provided on the reporting of PET-CT scans in post-therapy scenarios. The second part of the book describes and illustrates the use of PET-CT with FDG and other tracers to assess the treatment response of malignancies at different anatomic sites. Featuring a wealth of images, informative case-based discussion, and evidence-based teaching points, these disease-specific chapters clearly demonstrate the key role that PET-CT can play in distinguishing early responders from patients who are non-responders or are resistant to treatment. Prompt and accurate evaluation of treatment response is vital as we enter the era of individualized medicine, and this atlas will persuade readers of the considerable advantages of PET-CT over conventional radiological and clinical methods.

Clinical studies during the past 10 years have shown that PET is more sensitive than CT and MRI for the detection of many tumors. In many cases, however, for example in head and neck tumors, combination with radiological procedures is necessary. It may be speculated that PET should be the first study in a malignant tumor when metastatic spread is suspected. MRI and CT may then be restricted to those body areas which evince sites of increased glucose metabolism. Thus, a combination of metabolic and morphologic procedures will enhance tumor detection and change the therapeutic strategy. In this light, an atlas including PET, CT, MRI, and histology data seems desirable to combine metabolic and morphologic imaging. This book presents an overview of the available data which should be of great interest not only for specialists in radiology and nuclear medicine, but also for oncologists.

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), as any other imaging modality, is acceptable for routine clinical and research applications only if technical pitfalls can be avoided. Artefacts from incorrect or sub-optimal acquisition procedures should be recognized and, if possible, corrected retrospectively and the resulting image information interpreted correctly, which entails an appreciation of variants of the represented image information. This publication provides guidance on the physics and technical aspects behind PET and PET/CT image distortions. Cases are presented to provide nuclear medicine and radiology professionals with an assortment of examples of possible image distortions and errors in order to support a correct image interpretation. Nearly 70 typical PET and PET/CT cases, comprising image sets and cases, have been collected in this volume, all catalogued and augmented with explanations as to the causes of, and solutions to, each individual image problem. The atlas will prove useful to physicists, physicians, technologists, and service engineers in the clinical field.
