This paper compiles data from the Big Salmon River stock collected since 1951 and uses the data to assess changes in Atlantic salmon population since that time. The maximum likelihood method is used to model the catch-effort, juvenile electrofishing, adult fence, stream-side, & dive counts and the redd count data to obtain estimates of the annual escapements & returns during the time period of interest. The results indicate a range of spawning run sizes and several estimates of the percent decline in the Big Salmon River Atlantic salmon population over the last 30 years.

At present fishing for salmon in Norwegian home water is carried out with drift nets, bag nets, bend nets, lift nets and stake nets in the sea, and mainly by rods in the rivers. Catch statistics have been collected since 1876, but reliability of the statistics is questionable. The rates of exploitation on many Norwegian salmon stocks are very high, and data are presented and discussed for River Laerdal, River Eira and River Imsa stocks. As a result of this heavy exploitation with nets, the frequency of net-marked salmon entering rivers is high especially for griIse, although most net-marked salmon are only slightly damaged. It is suggested that mortality of salmon that are net-damaged hear or in brackish water is relatively small compared with salmon that escape from nets on the high seas. Some possible effects of selective fishing are also discussed. 159 Status of Exploitation of Atlantic Salmon in Norway REFERENCES Anon. (l985a) Salmon and sea trout fisheries 1984. Atlantic Salmon is a cultural icon throughout its North Atlantic range; it is the focus of probably the World’s highest profile recreational fishery and is the basis for one of the World’s largest aquaculture industries. Despite this, many wild stocks of salmon are in decline and underpinning this is a dearth of information on the nature and extent of population structuring and adaptive population differentiation, and its implications for species conservation. This important new book will go a long way to rectify this situation by providing a thorough review of the genetics of Atlantic salmon. Sponsored by the European Union and the Atlantic Salmon Trust, this book comprises the work of an international team of scientists, carefully integrated and edited to provide a landmark book of vital interest to all those working with Atlantic salmon.

Up-to-date information, knowledge and research in progress in scientific fields related to natural production of juvenile Atlantic salmon and some other ecologically similar fluvial salmonids is contained in the 25 papers and 12 abstracts contained in this publication, which were prepared for an international symposium held in St. John's, Newfoundland. Studies relate to stream ecology, invertebrates and predators, habitat improvement, competitive effects, behaviour and dispersal, habitat and production of juvenile salmon, population dynamics and relationships of juvenile salmon estimates to smolt yields. A list of participants at the conference is also provided.

From reviews of the hardback edition:- No matter how experienced a salmon man the reader is, I cannot believe he will study this extremely informative book without learning a great deal and gaining much enjoyment from doing so.The biology and life of the salmon . . .are all dealt with in a most interesting manner . . .Highly recommended. A book not to be read just once, but often to be consulted.; This book is dedicated to Salar the Salmon and what a tribute it is to this unique fish. Supporters of the Trust would be wise to purchase this book and to keep it on the shelf for future reference. - Atlantic Salmon Trust Progress Report

A historical look at and current guide to the Cains River in New Brunswick. There is almost a mystical aura surrounding the Cains and its Atlantic salmon and brook trout fishery. Only about a third of it was ever settled and then lightly, and by the middle of the twentieth century settlers had all given up and the river reverted to completely wild, which it still is today. The book also explores the Cains’s relationship with the Miramichi River, in particular the Black Brook, the biggest and most productive pool on the river. In low water, a substantial portion of the Cains’s fall run of fish stacks up there waiting for rain.
