The research and development of multi-dimensional pattern recognition, scene analysis, computer vision and image processing have progressed very rapidly in recent years. Among various models employed for pattern representation and analysis, the array grammar has attracted more and more attention because it has several advantages over others. This special volume, perhaps the first time ever in the literature, is a collection of 14 papers by prominent professionals and experts, aimed at promoting array grammars, patterns and recognizers. They are grouped in the following categories: (1) Array grammars and pattern generation, (2) Array pattern recognizers, (3) Coordinate grammars and L-systems, and (4) Hexagonal grids, tilings and encryption.

This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the Second International Conference on Parallel Image Analysis (ICPIA '92), held in Ube, Japan, December 21-23, 1992. The conference topics are data structures, parallel algorithms and architectures, neural networks, computational vision, syntactic generation and recognition, and multidimensional models. The first meeting with these topics was theInternational Colloquium on Parallel Image Processing, which took place in Paris in June 1991. The aim of the meetings is to bring together specialistsfrom various countries who are interested in the topics and to stimulatetheoretical and practical research in the field of parallel image processingand analysis. The volume contains three invited papers, a summary of a tutorial lecture, and twenty selected and refereed communications.

Annotation. Presents the latest research findings in theory, techniques, algorithms, and major applications of pattern recognition and computer vision, as well as new hardware and architecture aspects. Contains sections on basic methods in pattern recognition and computer vision, nine recognition applications, inspection and robotic applications, and architectures and technology. Some areas discussed include cluster analysis, 3D vision of dynamic objects, speech recognition, computer vision in food handling, and video content analysis and retrieval. This second edition is extensively revised to describe progress in the field since 1993. Chen is affiliated with the electrical and computer engineering department at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

This book is currently the only one on this subject containing both introductory material and advanced recent research results. It presents, at one end, fundamental concepts and notations developed in syntactic and structural pattern recognition and at the other, reports on the current state of the art with respect to both methodology and applications. In particular, it includes artificial intelligence related techniques, which are likely to become very important in future pattern recognition. The book consists of individual chapters written by different authors. The chapters are grouped into broader subject areas like “Syntactic Representation and Parsing”, “Structural Representation and Matching”, “Learning”, etc. Each chapter is a self-contained presentation of one particular topic. In order to keep the original flavor of each contribution, no efforts were undertaken to unify the different chapters with respect to notation. Naturally, the self-containedness of the individual chapters results in some redundancy. However, we believe that this handicap is compensated by the fact that each contribution can be read individually without prior study of the preceding chapters. A unification of the spectrum of material covered by the individual chapters is provided by the subject and author index included at the end of the book.
