I realize my vision of the robot you've always wanted might not be the perfect choice for everyone. Based on discussions with a lot of hobbyists, students, and educators, though, the robot described throughout this book has many of the capabilities many people are looking for in a robot. Knowing this, I decide to simplify the construction by utilizing off-the-shelf parts wherever possible and to greatly simplify the programming needed by utilizing RobotBASIC - a language I helped develop (visit www.RobotBASIC.org to download your free copy). My robot has multiple microcontrollers performing various tasks, but the overall operation of the robot is controlled by a real Windows 8 Tablet Computer (not Windows RT). The tablet's small size lets it serve as the robot's head and face and having a full featured computer in control makes it far easier to create exciting robotic behaviors. Furthermore, the power of Windows provides the text-to-speech and voice recognition needed to create a more natural man-machine interface.. I have tried to create a robot others can duplicate, but any machine this complicated can always be improved. I look forward to seeing how my efforts are expanded. Some readers may want or need to utilize different sensors, processors and/or programming languages, so I will do my best to explain the choices I made and the algorithms used to control the robot's behaviors. Hopefully, this book will allow others to build on my work to create the robot they have always wanted. There are many example programs throughout the text that explain the principles used to build the final programs used to control Arlo. The final versions and all the necessary supporting files can be downloaded from www.RobotBASIC.org. “I hit him so hard, the clash of helmets and pads sounded like a gunshot across the field. I crushed him with the hit, held on to him and crushed him again when I slammed him into the ground . . . I had arrived.” Arlo Brodie loves being at the heart of the action on the football field, getting hit hard and hitting back harder. Arlo’s dad cheers him on, but his mother quotes head injury statistics and refuses to watch games. Arlo’s girlfriend tries to make him see how dangerously he’s playing; when that doesn’t work, she calls time out on their relationship.Even Arlo’s coaches begin to track his hit count, ready to pull him off the field when he nears the limit. But for Arlo the winning plays, the cheering crowds, and the adrenaline rush are enough to convince him that everything is OK--in spite of the pain, the pounding, the dizziness, and the confusion. “Powerful.” —The New York Times Book Review “Sharp.” —Sports Illustrated “Heart-pounding.” —Washington Independent Review of Books “A powerful provocative look at the dark side of popular sports and their potential cost.” —Publishers Weekly “This unflinching examination of the price of athletic power with plenty of bone-crunching play-by-play action, is both thought-provoking and formidable.” —The Horn Book Magazine A Booklist 2015 Top Ten Sports Books for Youth A Junior Library Guild Selection

“A modern-day Crucible….Beneath the surface of a suburban utopia, madness lurks.” —Liv Constantine, bestselling author of The Last Mrs. Parrish “Sarah Langan is a phenomenal talent with a wicked sense of wry humor. Good Neighbors knocked me out. Like Shirley Jackson, Langan’s work blends a bleak streak with an underlying sense of the humane that wrung my heart.” —Victor LaValle, author of The Changeling Celeste Ng’s enthralling dissection of suburbia meets Shirley Jackson’s creeping dread in this propulsive literary noir, when a sudden tragedy exposes the depths of deception and damage in a Long Island suburb—pitting neighbor against neighbor and putting one family in terrible danger. Welcome to Maple Street, a picture-perfect slice of suburban Long Island, its residents bound by their children, their work, and their illusion of safety in a rapidly changing world. Arlo Wilde, a gruff has-been rock star who’s got nothing to show for his fame but track marks, is always two steps behind the other dads. His wife, beautiful ex-pageant queen Gertie, feels socially ostracized and adrift. Spunky preteen Julie curses like a sailor and her kid brother Larry is called “Robot Boy” by the kids on the block. Their next-door neighbor and Maple Street’s Queen Bee, Rhea Schroeder—a lonely community college professor repressing her own dark past—welcomes Gertie and family into the fold. Then, during one spritzer-fueled summer evening, the new best friends share too much, too soon. As tensions mount, a sinkhole opens in a nearby park, and Rhea’s daughter Shelly falls inside. The search for Shelly brings a shocking accusation against the Wildes that spins out of control. Suddenly, it is one mom’s word against the other’s in a court of public opinion that can end only in blood. A riveting and ruthless portrayal of American suburbia, Good Neighbors excavates the perils and betrayals of motherhood and friendships and the dangerous clash between social hierarchy, childhood trauma, and fear.

"Every Pixar movie is connected. I explain how and possibly why." These are the words that began the detailed essay now known as "The Pixar Theory," which came out way back in 2013. In this book, you'll find an analysis of every single Pixar movie to date and how it tells a hidden story lurking behind these classic movies. You'll learn about how the toys of Toy Story secretly owe their existence to the events of The Incredibles. You'll learn about what truly happened to the civilization of cars from Cars before the events of WALL-E. And of course, you'll find out the possible truth for why "Boo" of Monsters Inc. is the most important Pixar character yet. Welcome to the Pixar Theory. Don't forget to fasten your imagination.
