Excerpt from Applied Colloid Chemistry General Theory The earlier books on colloid chemistry presented the subject empirically because no other method was then possible. While we do not now know much about gelatinous precipitates and jellies, the theory of the rest of the subject is in fairly good shape and consequently I have written this book deductively. While my point of view differs considerably from Frcundlich's, it is a pleasure to acknowledge my debt to him for what he did in his admirable book. This volume on general theory should be followed by at least one volume on each of the following subjects: silicate industries; paints and varnishes; plastics; fibers and dyeing; photochemistry anti photography; petroleum industries; ore flotation and allied subjects; foods and beverages; soils and crops; biology and medicine. Allowing a minimum of three years to a volume, it seems very improbable that I shall write all of these single-handed. With the general theory of the subject once cleared up, there is no reason why the other volumes should not be written by people whose knowledge of the special subjects is much greater than my own. I am indebted to Messrs. Bray, Briggs, Clowes, Holmes, Johnston and Lamb for reading the manuscript and for critical comments on it. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
