The methodology of vector and matrix algebra has been used to simplify the triangulation procedures required to determine the position, motion, and growth of luminescent gas clouds injected into the upper atmosphere. Generated by chemicals discharged from rockets programed to effect point or continuous releases at preselected times, such clouds have proved to be a powerful experimental tool for gathering data relevant to upper atmosphere phenomena such as winds, wind shears, and turbulent transport mechanisms, and the production, maintenance, and decay of ionization in support of specific Air Force requirements in satellite operations, missile detection, and communications. This report describes some recent improvements in the hardware and software used to measure photographic images of chemical smoke trails. It also presents measurements of winds and windshears for five experiments conducted at White Sands Missile Range and Wallops Island from 1973 to 1978. In addition, it discusses sources of error in the measurements and suggests means of reducing the errors to improve the vertical resolution of the wind and windshear profiles.

The orientation and focal length of triangulation cameras that are used for observing the motions of chemical tracers deposited in the upper atmoshere can be determined by applying vector and matrix methods. Position measurements on star calibration photographs of as few as five star images yield good estimates of parameter values and their standard deviation. Since the computations require input data from pairs or triplets rather than from individual stars, the stellar data are very efficiently utilized. The methods developed are well suited to implementation on digital data processors. (Author).
