This synthesis, which describes the state of the practice for full- scale accelerated pavement testing (APT), will be of interest to state department of transportation (DOT) pavement design and materials engineers; DOT research staff, including field and laboratory materials testing personnel; and private industry APT equipment suppliers. State DOT administration and management personnel will have a particular interest in the application of APT results toward more efficient and effective pavement designs. Local transportation agencies may also have an interest in the topic. This synthesis reviews the capabilities and limitations of the major APT facilities available worldwide and describes the role and application of full-scale accelerated pavement testing in the development of pavement technology. This report of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) presents data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of the state DOTs, Canadian transportation agencies, and international organizations. A brief historical overview of APT, a discussion of the application of APT to research, and the application of APT to practice are included. Profiles of APT facilities throughout the world are included in an appendix.

This volume gathers the latest advances, innovations, and applications in the field of accelerated pavement testing (APT), presented at the 6th International Conference on Accelerated Pavement Testing, in Nantes, France, in April 2022. Discussing APT, which involves rapid testing of full-scale pavement constructions for structural deterioration, the book covers topics such as APT facilities, APT of asphalt concrete and sustainable/innovative materials, APT for airfield pavements, testing of maintenance and rehabilitation solutions, testing of smart and multi-functional pavements, data analysis and modeling, monitoring and non-destructive testing, and efficient means of calibrating/developing pavement design methods. Featuring peer-reviewed contributions by leading international researchers and engineers, the book is a timely and highly relevant resource for materials scientists and engineers interested in determining the performance of pavement structures during their service life (10+ years) in a few weeks or months.

"TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 433: Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing documents and summarizes significant findings from the various experimental activities associated with full-scale accelerated pavement testing (f-sAPT) programs that have taken place between 2000 and 2011. The report also identifies gaps in knowledge related to f-sAPT and where future research may be needed. NCHRP Synthesis 433 is designed to expand the f-sAPT base of knowledge documented in NCHRP Syntheses 325 and 235, both with the same title of Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing. f-sAPT is the controlled application of a wheel loading, at or above the appropriate legal load limit, to a pavement system to determine pavement response in a compressed time period. The acceleration of damage is achieved by one or more of the following factors: increased repetitions, modified loading conditions, imposed climatic conditions, and thinner pavements with a decreased structural capacity which have shorter design lives"--

This compendium gathers the latest advances in the area of Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT), a means of testing full-scale pavement construction in an accelerated manner for structural deterioration in a very short term. Compiling novel research results presented at the 5th International Conference on Accelerated Pavement Testing, San Jose, Costa Rica, the volume serves as a timely and highly relevant resource for materials scientists and engineers interested in determining the performance of a pavement structure during its service life (10+ years) in a few weeks or months.

The book presents the recent advances on testing and experimentation in civil engineering, especially in the branches of geotechnics, transportation, hydraulics, and natural resources. It includes advances in physical modelling, monitoring techniques, data acquisition and analysis, and provides an invaluable contribution for the installation of new civil engineering experimental facilities. The first part of the book covers the latest advances in testing and experimentation in key domains of geotechnics: soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics and rock engineering, and engineering geology. Some of the topics covered include new developments in topographic survey acquisition for applied mapping and in situ geotechnical investigations; laboratory and in situ tests to estimate the relevant parameters needed to model the behaviour of rock masses and land structures; monitoring and inspection techniques designed for offshore wind foundations. The second part of the book highlights the relevance of testing and monitoring in transportation. Full-scale accelerated pavement testing, and instrumentation becomes even more important nowadays when, for sustainability purposes, non-traditional materials are used in road and airfield pavements. Innovation in testing and monitoring pavements and railway tracks is also developed in this part of the book. Intelligent traffic systems are the new traffic management paradigm, and an overview of new solutions is addressed here. Finally, in the third part of the book, trends in the field and laboratory measurements and corresponding data analysis are presented according to the different hydraulic domains addressed in this publication, namely maritime hydraulics, surface water and river hydraulics and urban water.

This report describes CTR Study 1246, which proved to be very dynamic, in that the initial objectives were not only met, but they were followed up by new objectives. This was due to decisions taken by the project steering committee during the execution of the project. Following initial exploratory studies in 1988, the Texas SDHPT initiated the present study through which a strategy for the acquisition of a mobile accelerated pavement testing device had to be developed. Initially, the study focussed on the feasibility of accelerated testing and the need for it in Texas. As part of the initial study, the relationship of accelerated testing to overall pavement engineering was reviewed in detail. Once the feasibility had been illustrated, the objectives were redirected to the acquisition of a mobile accelerated pavement device. The different available methods and machines were evaluated, and subsequently the Mobile Load Simulator (MLS) was selected for future application on pavements in the state of Texas.
