A seminal moment in the study of U.S. Catholic parish life came in the 1980s with the publication of a series of reports from the ground-breaking Notre Dame Study of Catholic Parish Life. These reports are now badly outdated, as Catholic dioceses grapple with new challenges that didn't exist in the 80s. Topics that were not considered then, like greater Catholic mobility, increased cultural diversity, and structural re-organization as well as the rise of lay leadership, have attained new significance. This timely book, based on more than a decade of research, provides an in-depth portrait and analysis of the current state of parish life and leadership. Unique in the scope of the research and the timeliness of its findings, the book critically examines the current state of parish life. The authors draw on data from national polls of Catholics, national surveys of parishes, and thousands of in-pew surveys which explore parishioners' needs, experiences, and satisfaction with parish life in the twenty-first century. The book provides a unique 360-degree view of parish life from the perspective of pastors, parish staff, parishioners, as well as the larger Catholic population.

This book introduces the American Evangelical movement and the role it played in the support of Donald Trump. Specifically, it focuses on the Neocharismatic-Pentecostal (NCP) leaders, their beliefs, and their political strategies. The author examines why 81% of white evangelicals voted for Trump in 2016, and why he still received between 76% and 81% of their vote in 2020 despite losing the presidency. Additionally, the book discusses how NCP leaders are part of the Christian Right, a religious coalition with a political agenda centered on controversial issues such as anti-abortion activism, opposition to LGBTQ+ rights, and the protection of religious freedom. Structured around the three main ideas inspiring NCP leaders who supported Trump in 2016 and 2020—Dominion, Spiritual Warfare, and Eschatology (the End Times)—the book examines how these ideas have sustained the evangelicals close to U.S. political power in the Trump era. In light of the potential for Trump's return to power in 2024, the book serves as a warning of what a renewed alliance between Trump and his former NCP supporters could bring. It is an essential read for all students and researchers of Evangelicalism, Religion in America, Political Theology, or Religion and Politics.

The limitations of logic in the pursuit of a deeper understanding of the nature of reality has been encountered by philosophers, mathematicians, scientists, theologians, psychologists, and by people from any field of study, or walk of life, no matter their religious, political, or intellectual affiliation or belief. Any curious and thinking person who engages with abstract thought, the material world, or the nature of the cosmos, other people, or any pursuit of the mind inevitably runs up against the limitations of the ability of reason and logic to explain, interact with, and understand the mysteries of the universe. Drawing on Kurt Gödel's (1906-1978) application of the 'Paradox of Undecidability' from his Incompleteness Theorems (1931), The Destruction of Logic from Within will expand on G.W. Leibniz' (1646-1716) concept of the 'incompossible' and apply it to the limits of logic. This new volume will propose the idea that logic itself can potentially hold within it the ability to surpass its own limitations. This will be done by exploring the idea that the internal breakdown of logic itself has logically useful implications and applications for ways of seeking individual spiritual growth. It will be argued that when logic reaches its point of breakdown and internal contradiction, an opportunity arises to find meaning in a greater awareness of humanity's limitations of understanding. This, despite many scientific advancements and improvements to material well-being. The book is part philosophy and part theology, while aiming to reconcile the divergent pathways the two fields of study have taken since the 20th century. Meanwhile, the book's tone is set by telling the story of how spiritual freedom of conscience led to improved well-being for those who sought out a new beginning in North America. Additionally, The Destruction of Logic from Within will examine the biblical basis of freedom of conscience, and for the rationalist skeptic, put biblical coherence under a microscope. A supplemental glossary is contained in the volume for those who might be unfamiliar with some of the terms and concepts the book employs. As well, each chapter builds on the previous toward presenting a compelling case for accepting the enduring Christian message of God's love. About the Series: Experiments in Christian Thought This new book series from Idea Factory Press (Scarborough, Canada) will approach Christian spirituality in unconventional ways in order to make the merits of Christian ideas better understood for those seeking answers to life's big questions. In an age where the plausibility of God's existence is often rejected and even mocked reflexively on scientific grounds, this series will offer a second look at the topic of Christian spirituality. To those who unquestioningly adhere to the 'conventional wisdom' in current academic institutions that God is or ought to be an off-limits topic for any 'rational' minded person; this series is for you. To the university or college student who finds themself saying 'trust the science', or 'the science says', the author offers this series as a gateway to bridging rigid philosophical rationalism with spiritual belief. Over the course of exploring this series, it is hoped that the reader will come to understand that despite progress in material well-being and other advancements, human nature remains the same today as it has been throughout history. Any number of personal problems, experiences, or questions that a person has today has been experienced and asked by many people who have come and gone before the present time. In our present time, people have a tendency toward knee-jerk reactions to overturn, demolish, and reinvent anything that doesn't seem to fit with their presupposed worldview. To such people, it is as though humanity is in a perpetual state of crisis and the answer is to simply discredit the past with reckless abandon. Drawing from pre-21st century wisdom, this series offers comfort to those who are ideological drifters with the assurance that in history, someone somewhere has very likely experienced something very similar to the issues of today, personally and on a societal level. Over the course of the series it is hoped that Christian spirituality will show its compatibility with rationalism, and that mindset was the prevailing norm throughout much of history before the 20th century. The Experiments in Christian Thought series will be available in both English and Spanish in paperback and eBook editions. Brought to you by Idea Factory Press Scarborough, Canada. The Church as Safe Haven conceptualizes the rise of Chinese Christianity as a new civilizational paradigm that encouraged individuals and communities to construct a sacred order for empowerment in modern China. Once Christianity enrooted itself in Chinese society as an indigenous religion, local congregations acquired much autonomy which enabled new religious institutions to take charge of community governance. Our contributors draw on newly-released archival sources, as well as on fieldwork observations investigating what Christianity meant to Chinese believers, how native actors built their churches and faith-based associations within the pre-existing social networks, and how they appropriated Christian resources in response to the fast-changing world. This book reconstructs the narratives of ordinary Christians, and places everyday faith experience at the center. Tiedemann, Man-Shun Yeung.

What theologies are popular and formative of Christian thinking in the present day? How should they be assessed by those Christians who want to be "in the world" without being "of the world"? Theologies of the 21st Century begins with an overview of the historical roots from which current theological thinking has developed, and then moves on to a detailed evaluation of the chief doctrinal and practical emphases, taking an evangelical biblical perspective that seeks to be at once both critical and irenic.

When the leadership of Patterson Park Church looked for a book explaining the process of transitioning from a board-run church to an elder led form of church government, a structure they had come to believe was more in line with Scripture, they found none. God honored their efforts and two of their elders decided a book still needed to be written. Elder Governance: Insights into Making the Transition examines church government from a biblical and historical context and tells the story of Patterson Park's transition. The authors are hopeful that God will use their experience to help others considering such a transition.

This book explores the technological innovations and management practices of evangelical Christian religions. Beginning from the late 19th century, the author examines the evangelical church's increasing appropriation of business practices from the secular world as solutions to organizational problems. He notes especially the importance of the church growth movement and the formation of church networks. Particular attention is paid to the history of evangelical uses of computer technology, including connections the Christian Right has made within Silicon Valley. Most significantly, this book offers one of the first academic explorations of the use of cybernetics, systems theory and complexity theory by evangelical leaders and management theorists.
