Unprecedented urban growth makes sustainability in cities a crucial issue for policy makers, scholars and business leaders. This emerging urban crisis challenges environment-based and economic-based approaches to sustainability, and highlights the complex and critical role that culture plays in ensuring that cities are viable for future generations. This publication assesses the use of cultural indicators as a tool for policymakers, drawing on case studies of Patan (Nepal), Penang (Malaysia), Cheongju (South Korea), and Kanazawa (Japan), and offers fresh insights into the role of culture in fostering community development, environmental awareness and balanced economic growth.

The local administration system in India has a vast history, extending from the ancient and medieval periods today. The local government system was, however, formally launched in 1882 by Lord Rippon, and is popularly known as Magna Carta. Article 40 of the Indian constitution states the directive principles of state policy and the importance of local government administration to the functioning of Indian democracy. The government of India has appointed several committees to focus on the functioning and restructuring of Panchayat Raj bodies, including the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act and the Burya committee recommendations, which gave importance to political reservation for the Scheduled Tribes in Panchayat Raj bodies. The PESA Act paved the way for the political empowerment of Scheduled Tribes in Panchayat raj systems, allowing them the opportunity to utilise various politico-administrative powers and functions. This book explores the role and performance of Scheduled Tribe Sarpanches in Panchayat Raj local bodies in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. It sheds light on the development of, and welfare activities undertaken by, the Sarpanches. Further, this book also reveals the utilization of powers, functions and grants by the Tribal Sarpanches, giving a vivid picture of the decision-making style of Scheduled Tribal Sarpanches at the grassroots level of the Panchayat Raj system.

Safety Glazing Standards (US Federal Railroad Administration Regulation) (FRA) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Safety Glazing Standards (US Federal Railroad Administration Regulation) (FRA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 In this final rule, FRA is revising and clarifying existing regulations related to the use of glazing materials in the windows of locomotives, passenger cars, and cabooses. This final rule reduces paperwork and other economic burdens on the rail industry by removing a stenciling requirement for locomotives, passenger cars, and cabooses that are required to be equipped with glazing. This final rule also clarifies the application of the regulations to older equipment and to the end locations of all equipment to provide more certainty to the rail industry and more narrowly address FRA's safety concerns. In addition, this final rule clarifies the definition of passenger car, updates the rule by removing certain compliance dates that are no longer necessary, and, in response to comments on the proposed rule, modifies the application of the regulations to passenger cars and cabooses in a railroad's fleet that are used only for private transportation purposes and to older locomotives used in incidental freight service. This book contains: - The complete text of the Safety Glazing Standards (US Federal Railroad Administration Regulation) (FRA) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section

The 'Gender in Agriculture Sourcebook' provides an up-to-date understanding of gender issues and a rich compilation of compelling evidence of good practices and lessons learned to guide practitioners in integrating gender dimensions into agricultural projects and programs. It is serves as a tool for: guidance; showcasing key principles in integrating gender into projects; stimulating the imagination of practitioners to apply lessons learned, experiences, and innovations to the design of future support and investment in the agriculture sector. The Sourcebook draws on a wide range of experience from World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and other donor agencies, governments, institutions, and groups active in agricultural development. The Sourcebook looks at: access to and control of assets; access to markets, information and organization; and capacity to manage risk and vulnerability through a gender lens. There are 16 modules covering themes of cross-cutting importance for agriculture with strong gender dimensions (Policy, Public Administration and Governance; Agricultural Innovation and Education; Food Security; Markets; Rural Finance; Rural Infrastructure; Water; Land; Labor; Natural Resource Management; and Disaster and Post-Conflict Management) and specific subsectors in agriculture (Crops, Livestock, Forestry, and Fisheries). A separate module on Monitoring and Evaluation is included, responding to the need to track implementation and development impact. Each module contains three different sub-units: (1) A Module Overview gives a broad introduction to the topic and provides a summary of major development issues in the sector and rationale of looking at gender dimension; (2) Thematic Notes provide a brief and technically sound guide in gender integration in selected themes with lessons learned, guidelines, checklists, organizing principles, key questions, and key performance indicators; and (3) Innovative Activity Profiles describe the design and innovative features of recent and exciting projects and activities that have been implemented or are ongoing.
