Aortic Valve Transcatheter Intervention Calcific aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common heart valve anomaly, with a largely age-dependent prevalence, a calculated annual incidence rate in the range of 4-5% in general populations and up to 6% in patients aged 75 years and over. Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) was previously the only option available to patients with symptomatic, severe aortic stenosis. After the first-in-human transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) was performed by Alain Cribier in 2002, the treatment strategy for patients with symptomatic AS has been revolutionized. Since then, TAVI has grown exponentially, as a result of accruing evidence demonstrating safety and efficacy, and reduced invasiveness compared with SAVR. TAVI devices are continuously expanding to include several valve design options. As this strategy is continuously evolving to treat younger patients and lower-risk populations, aside from the long-term durability of the valve systems, procedural safety will become the focus of newer-generation devices. This book is a practical handbook devoted to the optimization of TAVI procedures, through a focused containment of complications. Through an integrated evaluation of the clinical status, imaging techniques and laboratory findings, the authors provide readers with clear messages on preventive and therapeutic recommendations.

Intracardiac Echocardiography is the first echocardiographic textbook of its kind to specifically cover ICE. Discussing all aspects of intracardiac ultrasound, it allows readers to perfect ICE image acquisition and helps to guide interpretation of this information during interventional and electrophysiologic procedures. Unique and informative, the text explores: introductory echo physics currently available intracardiac ultrasound systems basic image acquisition the role of ICE in both the interventional and electrophysiology laboratory, as well as in the diagnostic setting. Featuring expert commentary by leaders in the field, the book also includes high quality echocardiographic images illustrating how ICE is used in a wide variety of procedures such as transseptal catheterization, PFO and ASD closure, atrial fibrillation ablation procedures, and many others.

This book provides comprehensive information on transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), which was introduced for the treatment of aortic valve disease less than two decades ago. It explains how TAVI has delivered satisfactory results even in high and intermediate risk patients and outlines how it continues to evolve, thus requiring awareness of state of the art approaches to indication, risk stratification, device choice, procedure, and follow-up. In addition, it reports on the complex and multidisciplinary approach needed to maximize the efficacy, safety, and appropriateness of TAVI, providing detailed clinical, interventional and surgical perspectives focusing on the development of this cardiovascular intervention. Starting with the history of TAVI, addressing the interventional anatomy of aortic valve disease, and reporting on the expert authors’ day-to-day experiences, this highly informative book offers an essential update for all cardiologists and surgeons interested in transcatheter aortic valve implantation, as well as any clinician, decision-maker and stakeholder involved in patient selection, procedural management, and follow-up.

Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery is a relatively new field that cardiac surgeons are increasingly embracing. Its adoption is exponentially increasing, and patients and cardiologists are demanding this with more enthusiasm. This is a current subject of great interest and contemporary results are already present, with more awaiting to be published. The book describes the whole journey through the set-up of a minimally invasive mitral valve surgery program, pertinent investigations, patient selection, different approaches (including endoscopic and robotic), cardio-pulmonary bypass, re-operations and its application with tricuspid and atrial fibrillation surgery. This book is directed to all training cardiac surgeons and cardiologists, consultant cardiac surgeons and cardiologists, anaesthetists, intensive care specialists and perfusionists. This is the first book authored exclusively on this subject. The two editors are leading authorities on this subject in UK and are mentors for many surgical programs. Every chapter is authored by specialists in that particular aspect of minimally invasive mitral valve surgery discussed. The contributors are mainly from USA and Europe.

After the success of the first two editions, this expanded and extensively revised edition provides the interventional cardiologist with detailed, state of the art information on key techniques and approaches to percutaneous treatment of left side cardiac valve disease, keeping pace with the rapid and dynamic evolution in the discipline. Many new techniques and resources are now available, including new devices for transcatheter aortic valve implantation and new approaches to transcatheter mitral valve replacement. Numerous images will help the reader to understand the steps of each procedure and the characteristics of the different devices available. The potential complications and expected or potential morbidity from each procedure are discussed in depth, along with the best ways to manage them. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation has revolutionized the field of interventional cardiology. Initially envisaged as a palliative technique for inoperable patients, it now offe rs high-risk patients a viable alternative to surgery. Several techniques are also available of transcatheter mitral valve repair, and initial cases of transcatheter mitral valve replacement have also been reported: the interest in these techniques is such that further significant technological advances are expected to be seen over the next few years. This highly informative, easy to read, and carefully structured guide provides interventional cardiologists with updated knowledge on the application of transcatheter techniques to cardiac valves.

This book introduces classic and unique cases in 3D TEE in structural heart disease interventions. In each all the 40 cases, background information, clinical presentations, and diagnostic findings are present and followed by step-by-step approaches of interventional therapies and outcomes after the procedures. The highlight of the book is to utilize extensive illustrations, over 500, to demonstrate various cardiovascular pathologies. Most of the figures are 3D transesophageal echocardiograms, they are cooperated with 2D transesophageal echocardiograms, X rays, fluoroscopies, computed tomograms, etc. Since the echo images obtained in clinic practice are moving images, it also includes over 300 videos, which serve as a supplement to the static illustrations in this book. The atlas is organized into five chapters. In Chapters one, cases received closure of congenital and acquired cardiac defects are described. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation and its complications are discussed in Chapter two and three. Chapter four details the valve-in-valve therapy. Chapter five covers MitraClip therapy. It offers readers an insider’s view of 3D transesophageal echocardiography in structural heart disease interventions and to refresh their clinical work.
