Excerpt from A Genealogy and History of the Kauffman-Coffman Families of North America, 1584 to 1937: Including Brief Outlines of Allied Swiss and Palatine Families Who Were Among the Pioneer Settlers in Lancaster and York Counties of Pennsylvania From 1717 On Kauffmans, who in some way might be related to my ancestor prior to coming to America. To accomplish the results of this work, research necessitated my examining court records of over fifty counties in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky. Church records, other genealogies, tombstones, libraries, and numerous letters of inquiry added bits of information. To secure data from Switzerland and, Germany, I was compelled to learn German sufficient to read and write to various German and Swiss who gave me in most cases the kindest consideration. "This book is aimed at preserving the roots of the Coffman's, who were early Western Kentucky Settlers. During the first decade of the 1800's, Catherine, Benjamin and John Coffman settled in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. As generations pass and families disperse to the four winds, one's heritage and ancestry can be 'lost to the ages'. This assemblage of photographs, stories, vignettes and a robust ancestral analysis should provide a good sense of our early Coffman history in Kentucky and assist in tracing your ancestral connections to the 'Coffman Clan'." -- excerpt taken from introduction.
