Many changes have happened in sociology around the world in the last few decades. This reference work offers a thorough overview of recent developments in sociology in a wide range of countries. The chapters, written by expert contributors, provide first-hand information on new research trends and significant advances. Chapters generally provide a broad historical context, and then focus on developments in sociology since 1975. Part One contains chapters on sociology in Western and Northern Europe. Part Two, on the Western Hemisphere, includes several chapters on sociology in the United States, along with Canada and Latin America. Part Three discusses the many changes in Eastern Europe that have happened in recent years, while Parts Four, Five, and Six, covering Southern Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and the Far East add a valuable perspective to the work. Chapters include detailed bibliographies, and a selected, general bibliography concludes the work.

This edited collection explores the genesis of Bourdieu's classical book Distinction and its international career in contemporary Social Sciences. It includes contributions from contemporary sociologists from diverse countries who question the theoretical legacy of this book in various fields and national contexts. Invited authors review and exemplify current controversies concerning the theses promoted in Distinction in the sociology of culture, lifestyles, social classes and stratification, with a specific attention dedicated to the emerging forms of cultural capital and the logics of distinction that occur in relation to material consumption or bodily practices. They also empirically illustrate the theoretical contribution of Distinction in relation with such notions as field or habitus, which fruitfulness is emphasized in relation with some methodological innovations of the book. In this respect, a special focus is put on the emerging stream of "distinction studies" and on the opportunities offered by the geometrical data analysis of social spaces.

Designed as an introductory text, the book will attempt to show the relationship between life concerns (as shown in culture) and life chances (as shown in social structure) within the Australian context. The emphasis throughout will be upon observing and explaining social behaviour as an ongoing exchange between relatively fixed power bases and emergent pressures for change from new resources and interpretations of reality. Social structure is presented as the social distribution of life chances through the pattern of existing resources, the key institutions and groups which limit social interaction and the organization of life stages. Culture is presented as the means by which the social structure is reproduced, the patterning of central life concerns through traditions, rituals, socialization in the family, school, work and media. The central problem is seen as that of legitimacy and conflict over access to and use of valued social resources, with the study of deviance, conformity and social change giving a basis for understanding social theory as a search for meaning and control.
