Excerpt from Anti-Theistic Theories The present volume is closely connected with the work entitled 'Theism, ' which was published in 1877. The two works may be regarded as two parts of a system of Natural Theology which is still very far from complete. The chief omission in the present volume relates to Agnosticism. The explanation of the omission is that the author was anxious to avoid, in a semi-popular work, abstruse metaphysical discussion, and has long cherished the hope of being able, at some future time, to publish a historical account and critical examination of the various phases of Modern Agnosticism. He has again to thank Mr James A. Campbell of Stracathro for kindly assisting him in the work of revision. Excerpt from Atheism and Theism A conviction of the Divine existence is wrought in the mind by an Observation of nature, and is a necessary conclusion from a consideration Of our own being. I am, and therefore thou must be, is a just inference from a settled fact, and one which commends itself to the judgment Of every re ecting mind. I have not, therefore, entered into any elaborate argument to disprove the atheistic assump. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Theistic Argument: As Affected by Recent Theories, a Course of Lectures Delivered at the Lowell Institute on Boston Speculative element, kept within due bounds, that imparted a peculiar fascination to his portrayal of historical persons and eras. When, therefore, he was invited to give a Course of Lectures at the Lowell Institute, in the spring of 1880, on the foundations of Natural Religion, he needed no other qualification than a careful review of the recent literature on the subject. This preparation was conscientiously made. In particular, the most prominent writers, as Mill, Spencer, Huxley, Dar win, Tyndall, who have dealt directly or indirectly with these topics from points of view more or less at variance with prevalent opinion, he examined afresh. At the same time he did not pass by the ablest of the later writers in defense of Theism. I perceive that he had profited especially by the perusal of Janet's thorough treatise on Final Causes, and Professor Flint's excellent volumes on Theism and anti-theistic Theories. The result of his reflections and researches appears on the pages which follow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Syllabus of Prof. Patton's Lectures on the Anti-Theistic Theories This is the critical part of Theism. In it we consider (1) the forms of the anti-theistic theories and (2) the practical effects upon life of a theistic: or anti-theistic View. Two things are posited in Theism: (1) The phenomenal world of plurality is resolvable int-o a unity - there is one ulti mate ground of all existence. (2) All existence is made up of three fundamental data (a) a personal God, (b) a total ity of phenomena. (e) a finite self. All anti-theistic theories grow out of a denial of one or the other of these categories. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
