Excerpt from Annual Report President and Treasurer, 1914-15, Vol. 2: Wellesley, Massachusetts, March, 1916 The history of the year must record losses as well as gains. On January 11, 1915, Katharine Coman, Emeritus Professor of Economics, died at her home in Wellesley. Miss Coman's active service to the College covers a period of thirty-three years. On her retirement in June, 1913, the Trustees made Miss Coman Professor of Economics Emeri tus, and in accepting her resignation testified to the value of her work for the College by adopting a resolution which was printed in the President's Report for the academic year 1912-13. Miss Coman joined the faculty at Wellesley in 1880 as a young instructor in Rhetoric; from 1881 to 1883 she was instructor in History; she was made Professor of His tory in 1883, Professor of History and Political Economy in 1885, and when in 1900 the department of Economics was organized, she was made Professor of Economics and Sociology and given charge of the new department. In 1899-00, the first year of President Hazard's term of office, Miss Coman served the College as Dean. Excerpt from Wellesley College Bulletin, Vol. 2: Annual Reports President and Treasurer 1915-16 To the Board oj Trustees of Wellesley College: - I have the honor to submit my fifth report as President of Wellesley College, covering the year ending June 30, 1916. Much interesting material supplementing this report will be found in the reports of the Dean, the Chairman of the Graduate Committee, the Librarian, and the Director of Halls of Residence, published herewith. On March 16, 1916, the Librarian of the College, Henrietta St. Barbe Brooks, died at her home after a long illness. Because of physical disability Miss Brooks at her own suggestion gave only half time to the College during the academic year 1914-15. In April, 1915, increasing weakness made it necessary for her to give up her work altogether, and while she gave valuable counsel to the library staff until the time of her death, she was not able to return to the Library after the spring of 1915. Miss Brooks was appointed assistant librarian in 1903, acting librarian in 1909, and upon the death of the librarian, Caroline F. Pierce, she was appointed librarian in 1911. The minute adopted by the Academic Council admirably characterizes Miss Brooks' administration of the Library and is given in full: - In putting on record our sense of the great loss which Wellesley has sustained in the death of her librarian, Henrietta St. Barbe Brooks, a loyal alumna of the College, we of the Academic Council speak not for ourselves alone, but for all, teachers and students, who have shared in the benefits of an exceptionally able, liberal, and gracious library administration.
