Excerpt from Ninth Annual Report of the State Board of Health of the State of Ohio: For the Year Ending October 31, 1894 Small-pox manifested during the year a decided tendency to become epidemiqandhasnotbeensopmvalentin the United States since the epidemic years 1882-3. The disease became firmly established in the city of Chicago, and still lingers there. During the year 1894 there were cases of and deaths from small-pox in that city. Lines of connect ing railways bring our State into such olose relationship with Chicago that an unchecked epidemic of small-pox in that city is a serious menace to Ohio. There are over nine hundred sweatshops in Chicago where oloth lag and other textile fabrics are made. Small-pox invaded the sweatshop district during 1893, and as Ohio purchases a large amount of clothing from Chicago it was feared that the disease would be introduced through this medium. At the instance of the Ohio Board a meeting of State health officials was held in Chicago, May 10, with the view of learning the exact situation as regarded small-pox. And the danger of its impor tation to other states. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
