By 2050 the world's population is projected to grow by one-third, reaching between 9 and 10 billion. With globalization and expected growth in global affluence, a substantial increase in per capita meat, dairy, and fish consumption is also anticipated. The demand for calories from animal products will nearly double, highlighting the critical importance of the world's animal agriculture system. Meeting the nutritional needs of this population and its demand for animal products will require a significant investment of resources as well as policy changes that are supportive of agricultural production. Ensuring sustainable agricultural growth will be essential to addressing this global challenge to food security. Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability identifies areas of research and development, technology, and resource needs for research in the field of animal agriculture, both nationally and internationally. This report assesses the global demand for products of animal origin in 2050 within the framework of ensuring global food security; evaluates how climate change and natural resource constraints may impact the ability to meet future global demand for animal products in sustainable production systems; and identifies factors that may impact the ability of the United States to meet demand for animal products, including the need for trained human capital, product safety and quality, and effective communication and adoption of new knowledge, information, and technologies. The agricultural sector worldwide faces numerous daunting challenges that will require innovations, new technologies, and new ways of approaching agriculture if the food, feed, and fiber needs of the global population are to be met. The recommendations of Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability will inform a new roadmap for animal science research to meet the challenges of sustainable animal production in the 21st century.

Animal science is the science concerned with the production and management of animals with potential human benefit. Farm animals like livestock and poultry are raised for milk, meat, eggs and other items. Modern animal production systems rely on animal breeding techniques. Breeding seldom occurs spontaneously. It is initiated to encourage the appearance of desirable traits, such as prolificness, fast growth rates, hardiness, low feed consumption per unit of growth, higher yields, improved fiber qualities, etc. Selective breeding has increased productivity immensely. Purebred breeding is achieved through inbreeding and culling. The advent of transgenic animals and better ways to control gene expression has resulted in significant developments in animal science. This book outlines the processes and applications of biotechnology for agricultural production in detail. It traces the progress in the field of animal science and highlights some of its key concepts and applications. This book is a resource guide for experts as well as students.

This book is about resource allocation matters with the aim to further development thoughts and models on resource allocation applied to livestock production. It contains 18 chapters divided into 4 parts which discuss resources and resource allocation patterns, trade-offs, metabolic constraints to resource allocation and the process of homeorhesis with a special emphasis to homeorhesis during heat stress; the relationship between food intake and resources allocated to body maintenance, growth, reproduction and the immune response; the consequences of high production efficiency in pigs, poultry and dairy cattle and the consequences of improved production by means of biological engineering and options to include resource allocation matters in the breeding objective, animal welfare and in resource allocation modelling.

Animal husbandry is the branch of agriculture that is concerned with the selective breeding, caring and raising of livestock for meat, milk, leather, eggs, etc. A wide variety of animals are raised for their products. Some of the commonly raised animals include cow, sheep, goat and pig. Species such as llama, rabbit, horse, guinea pig, etc. are also raised as livestock in some parts of the world. Modern animal husbandry focuses on intensive farming practices for meeting market demand. Animal breeding strives to ensure higher growth rate, low feed consumption for each unit of growth, prolificness, higher yields, etc. Artificial insemination and embryo transfer are common practices that are used today. This textbook is a compilation of chapters that discuss the most vital concepts in the field of animal husbandry and livestock management. It elucidates the concepts and innovative models around prospective developments with respect to raising livestock. This book is a complete source of knowledge on the present status of this important field.
