During World War II, several hundred thousand Polish citizens were deported from their homeland by Soviet authorities and sent to the gulag; many died there. For over 60 years, the Hoover Institution Library & Archives has preserved the testimonies of more than 30,000 Polish survivors. Among these are 171 accounts of Polish Jews who suffered both German and Soviet occupation; were transported hundreds or thousands of miles to suffer again in brutal Soviet forced-labor camps; and were eventually released, escaping to the Middle East. Now, these testimonies are collected for the first time in a scholarly English translation. The accounts—recorded shortly after the events they describe, with witnesses' memories still fresh—reveal many of the systematic horrors of World War II, clearly indicating the genocidal essence of the Soviet camp system and illustrating its mechanisms. They offer extraordinary information and insight on the activities of the Polish resistance movement, Jewish religious and community life, working conditions, the experiences of women and children, and more. These testimonies form a vital historical record of systemic human brutality that should never be forgotten. But they also paint a portrait of unwavering perseverance amid the struggle for survival.

“My Special Angel, Miss Beverly Ann Brown,” is a story celebrating the life of a person who was born in 1962 and diagnosed at birth as a “Mongoloid,” later known as Down’s syndrome. At that time many “mentally retarded” persons as they were referred to, were institutionalized at birth or kept at home as “closet children.” Because they were believed to be unteachable, there were no schools or vocational workshops to even try to teach them. Change was coming and I believe that God’s purpose for Beverly on earth was to be a part of that change of the attitude toward and the mistreatment and neglect of the mentally challenged. Even at a young age, Beverly was a blessing spreading God’s love with her hugs to everyone she met. Through her experiences on her life’s journey and her desire for independence, this red-haired, energetic, beautiful lady was instrumental in helping to pave the way for other mentally challenged persons. At age fifty-five, when Beverly had fulfilled her mission and purpose on earth, God called her home.

This is a true story of my wonderful marriage, and the people involved are still alive except for Dorothy. Before I retired I was able to buy our lake home in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, and Dorothy would spend summers there with our two youngest children. This was lake property ceded from the Chippewa Indians and had been owned by Dorothys aunt. After my retirement this became our permanent home for next thirty years. People there call it Gods country, because it is so peaceful and quietexcept in the summer with the influx of tourists. For one of the Fourth of July parades in the town, the Broz clan of about twenty joined in. With our yellow T-shirts and our family tree on the back, we all had kazoos, making music as we marched along. We won first prize. Perhaps some day we might have a St. Dorothy of Lac du Flambeau.
