Excerpt from Ancient Stained and Painted Glass Several of the illustrations are taken from the county of Essex, which is generally supposed to be below the average in remains of old painted glass, and I may add that it would not be difficult to illustrate all the styles in painted glass by fine speci mens from Essex alone. This fact affords reasonable justification for the inference that there is, in every county in England, an open book about old painted glass which only needs a little editing copying and arranging the copies in some fairly accessible place - to make it of the greatest possible value to students and craftsmen, and to the public at large. Excerpt from Stained Glass Stained glass, as the term is used, is taken to include also painting upon glass. As a matter of fact, glass staining and glass painting are two quite different things. To build up a mosaic with pieces of coloured glass, each separate tint cut out of a separate sheet of potmetal, is one thing; to paint upon a sheet of white or coloured glass is another thing altogether. 'in fact, they are not merely two different ways but two opposite ways of arriving at a result. But there is this excuse for grouping them (as it is the custom to do) under one title, that from very early days the two processes of work were used together. Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Difference of Style Observable in Ancient Glass Paintings, Vol. 1: Especially in England; With Hints on Glass Painting; d104 It is proper that I should make some observations on the plates which accompany this work. I had originally intended, in addition to the other illustrations, to give a general view of a window belonging to each style, and had prepared drawings for that purpose: but I was in duced to abandon the project, from a conviction that the usefulness of these plates would not be commensurate with the increased cost of the work. The difficulty of producing in a plate the eject of painted glass, has never yet been overcome, even in engravings of large size, and as it is enhanced by every reduction in the scale of the plate. Excerpt from Stained Glass as an Art In the first place I desire to express my sincere and cordial thanks to my friends Sir Edward Burne Jones and Mr. William Blake Richmond, for their courtesy in allowing me to reproduce some of their designs, and thus to give specimens of the best work in stained glass of the nineteenth century. In the next place I must explain why the direct illustrations of my text are taken from my own work only. Considerations _of convenience and of good taste determined me to take this course. I am quite convinced of a general accord between my brother artists and myself as to the main principles laid down in this treatise, but it is more than probable that we may differ on minor points; and I might find myself quoting some features in their designs in illustration of an argument of my own, with which they might not Wholly agree; I might read some thing into their work which was not really in their intention. On the other hand, there _are some few matters about which we do not absolutely agree, and by employing my friends' designs in direct illustration of my principles, I might appear to be guilty of an inconsistency, unless I adopted the objectionable alternative of calling attention to the points in question for the purpose of adverse criticism.
