Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are one type of ad hoc networks with data-collecting function. Because of the low-power, low-cost features, WSN attracts much attention from both academia and industry. However, since WSN is driven by batteries and the multi-hop transmission pattern introduces energy hole problem, energy management of WSN became one of fundamental issues. In this dissertation, we study the energy management strategies for WSNs. Firstly, we propose a packets propagation scheme for both deterministic and random deployment of WSNs so to prolong their lifetime. The essence of packets propagation scheme is to control transmission power so as to balance the energy consumption for the entire WSN. Secondly, a characteristic correlation based data aggregation approach is presented. Redundant information during data collection can be effectively mitigated so as to reduce the packets transmission in the WSN. Lifetime of WSN is increased with limited overhead. Thirdly, we also provide a two-tier lifetime optimization strategy for wireless visual sensor network (VSN). By deploying redundant cheaper relay nodes into existing VSN, the lifetime of VSN is maximized with minimal cost. Fourthly, our two-tier visual sensor network deployment is further extended considering multiple base stations and image compression technique. Last but not the least, description of UC AirNet WSN project is presented. At the end, we also consider future research topics on energy management schemes for WSN.

Power efficiency is the most constraining requirement for viable operation of battery-powered networked sensors. Conventionally, dynamic power management (DPM) is used to put sensor nodes into different states such as active, idle, and sleep, each consuming a certain level of power. Within the active state, communication operational states, such as receive and transmit consume different levels of nodal power. This thesis shows how DPM states and protocol operational states can be combined into a single stochastic model to finely evaluate the power consumption performance of a medium access control (MAC) protocol. The model is formulated as a semi-Markov decision process (SMDP) wherein the node's states, sojourn times, and transition probabilities are controlled by a virtual node controller. The overall operation of a communication protocol is viewed as a randomized policy for the SMDP, and the long-run average cost per unit time measures the energy efficiency of the protocol.

Wireless networks represent an inexpensive and convenient way to connect to the Internet. However, despite their applications across several technologies, one challenge still remains: to understand the behavior of wireless sensor networks and assess their performance in large-scale scenarios. When a large number of network nodes need to interact, developing suitable analytical models is essential to ensure the appropriate coverage and throughput of these networks and to enhance user mobility. This is intrinsically difficult due to the size and number of different network nodes and users. This book highlights some examples which show how this problem can be overcome with the use of different techniques. An intensive parameter analysis shows the reader how to the exploit analytical models for an effective development and management of different types of wireless networks.

Energy Management in Wireless Sensor Networks discusses this unavoidable issue in the application of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). To guarantee efficiency and durability in a network, the science must go beyond hardware solutions and seek alternative software solutions that allow for better data control from the source to delivery. Data transfer must obey different routing protocols, depending on the application type and network architecture. The correct protocol should allow for fluid information flow, as well as optimizing power consumption and resources – a challenge faced by dense networks. The topics covered in this book provide answers to these needs by introducing and exploring computer-based tools and protocol strategies for low power consumption and the implementation of routing mechanisms which include several levels of intervention, ranging from deployment to network operation. Explores ways to manage energy consumption during the design and implementation of WSN Helps users implement an increase in network longevity Presents intrinsic characteristics of wireless sensor networks

In this dissertation, we develop and analyze effective energy management policies for wireless sensor networks in emerging applications. Existing methods in this area have primarily focused on energy conservation through the use of various communication techniques. However, in most applications of wireless sensor networks, savings in energy come at the expense of several performance parameters. Therefore it is necessary to manage energy consumption while being conscious of its effects on performance. In most cases, such energy-performance issues are specific to the nature of the application. Our research has been motivated by new techniques and applications where efficient energy-performance trade-off decisions are required. We primarily study the following trade-off cases: energy and node replacement costs (Case I), energy and delay (Case II), and energy and availability (Case III). We consider these trade-off situations separately in three distinct problem scenarios. In the first problem (Case I), we consider minimizing energy and node replacement costs in underwater wireless sensor networks for seismic monitoring application. In this case, we introduce mixed-integer programming (MIP) formulations based on a combined routing and node replacement policy approach and develop effective policies for large problem instances where our MIP models are intractable. In the second problem (Case II), we develop a Markov decision process (MDP) model to manage energy-delay trade-off in network coding which is a new energy-saving technique for wireless networks. Here we derive properties of the optimal policy and develop insights into other simple policies that are later shown to be efficient in particular situations. In the third problem (Case III), we consider an autonomous energy harvesting sensor network where nodes are turned off from time to time to operate in an "energy-neutral" manner. In this case, we use stochastic fluid-flow analysis to evaluate and analyze the availability of the sensor nodes under effective energy management policies. In each of the above problem cases, we develop analytical formulations, and derive and/or analyze policies that effectively manage the considered energy-performance trade-off. Overall, our analyses and solution methods make new contributions to both operations research and communication networking literature. Due to the distributed nature of information collection in wireless sensor networks and the inherent limitations of the component devices, the ability to store, locate, and retrieve data and services with minimum energy expenditure is a critical network function. Additionally, effective search protocols must scale efficiently and consume a minimum of network energy and memory reserves. A novel search protocol, the Trajectory-based Selective Broadcast Query protocol, is proposed. An analytical model of the protocol is derived, and an optimization model is formulated. Based on the results of analysis and simulation, the protocol is shown to reduce the expected total network energy expenditure by 45.5 percent to 75 percent compared to current methods. This research also derives an enhanced analytical node model of random walk search protocols for networks with limited-lifetime resources and time-constrained queries. An optimization program is developed to minimize the expected total energy expenditure while simultaneously ensuring the proportion of failed queries does not exceed a specified threshold. Finally, the ability of the analytical node model to predict the performance of random walk search protocols in large-population networks is established through extensive simulation experiments. It is shown that the model provides a reliable estimate of optimum search algorithm parameters.
