These volumes provide a reference source of different gas chromatographic, liquid chromatographic, or thin-layer chromatographic techniques for the qualitative determination of various therapeutic agents, including antibiotics, vitamins and hormones, drugs of abuse in body fluids, dosage forms, or food stuffs. Over 5000 publications were reviewed to prepare tables of chromatographic data for 800 compounds, arranged alphabetically by generic drug name or by drug groups. A detailed summary of the extraction procedure described in each publication included in the table of a particular drug is also provided. This easy-to-read handbook is useful for selecting an appropriate chromatographic procedure for the determination of a given compound according to the available facilities.

Edited by renowned protein scientist and bestselling author Roger L. Lundblad, with the assistance of Fiona M. Macdonald of CRC Press, this fifth edition of the Handbook of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology gathers a wealth of information not easily obtained, including information not found on the web. Presented in an organized, concise, and simple-to-use format, this popular reference allows quick access to the most frequently used data. Covering a wide range of topics, from classical biochemistry to proteomics and genomics, it also details the properties of commonly used biochemicals, laboratory solvents, and reagents. An entirely new section on Chemical Biology and Drug Design gathers data on amino acid antagonists, click chemistry, plus glossaries for computational drug design and medicinal chemistry. Each table is exhaustively referenced, giving the user a quick entry point into the primary literature. Methods in Carbohydrate Chemistry, Volume VIII: General Methods describes the principles and mode of operation of general methods for the analysis and structural characterization of carbohydrates. This book is organized into two sections encompassing 50 chapters. The first section highlights the methods on automated chromatographic techniques; enzymic and other methods for structural analysis of polysaccharides. This section also explores the application of 13C NMR spectroscopy to carbohydrate chemistry. The second section describes the synthesis of deoxy and branched-chain sugars, 1,2-transglycosides, de-N- and de-O-sulfation, and de-N-acetylation of polysaccharides. This book is an invaluable source for organic and analytical chemists, as well as for carbohydrate scientists and researchers.

Insects as a group occupy a middle ground in the biosphere between bac teria and viruses at one extreme, amphibians and mammals at the other. The size and general nature of insects present special problems to the student of entomology. For example, many commercially available in struments are geared to measure in grams, while the forces commonly en countered in studying insects are in the milligram range. Therefore, tech the study of insects or in those fields concerned with niques developed in the control of insect pests are often unique. Methods for measuring things are common to all sciences. Advances sometimes depend more on how something was done than on what was measured; indeed a given field often progresses from one technique to another as new methods are discovered, developed, and modified. Just as often, some of these techniques find their way into the classroom when the problems involved have been sufficiently ironed out to permit students to master the manipulations in a few laboratory periods. Many specialized techniques are confined to one specific research labo ratory. Although methods may be considered commonplace where they are used, in another context even the simplest procedures may save con siderable time. It is the purpose of this series (1) to report new develop ments in methodology, (2) to reveal sources of groups who have dealt with and solved particular entomological problems, and (3) to describe ex periments which might be applicable for use in biology laboratory courses.
