Into the Deep traces one woman's spiritual odyssey from birthright evangelicalism through postmodern feminism and, ultimately, into the Roman Catholic Church. As a college student, Abigail Favale experienced a feminist awakening that reshaped her life and faith. A decade later, on the verge of atheism, she found herself entering the oldest male-helmed institution on the planet--the last place she expected to be. With humor and insight, the author describes her gradual exodus from Christian orthodoxy and surprising swerve into Catholicism. She writes candidly about grappling with wounds from her past, Catholic sexual morality, the male priesthood, and an interfaith marriage. Her vivid prose brings to life the wrenching tumult of conversion--a conversion that began after she entered the Church and began to pry open its mysteries. There, she discovered the startling beauty of a sacramental cosmos, a vision of reality that upended her notions of gender, sexuality, identity, and authority. Into the Deep is a thoroughly twenty-first-century conversion, a compelling account of recovering an ancient faith after a decade of doubt.

In this compelling new biography, historian Niccolò Capponi frees Machiavelli (1469–1527) from centuries of misinterpretation. Exploring the Renaissance city of Florence, where Machiavelli lived, Capponi reveals the man behind the legend. A complex portrait of Machiavelli emerges—at once a brilliantly skillful diplomat and a woefully inept liar; a sharp thinker and an impractical dreamer; a hardnosed powerbroker and a risk-taking gambler; a calculating propagandist and an imprudent jokester. Capponi's intimate portrait of Machiavelli reveals his behavior as utterly un-Machiavellian, his vision of the world as limited by his very provincial outlook. In the end, Machiavelli was frustrated by his own political failures and utterly baffled by the success of his book The Prince.

Figuratively speaking this is a "rags to riches" story. It tells of a person who, in his youth, was a loner and an avowed atheist. He had no time for anyone but himself. He rebuffed all attempts by his neighbors to be friendly. He had a very peculiar habit later in life that was puzzling to the citizens of his town. Thrust upon him during his declining years by a "pushy" social worker was a baby whom he was expected to rear. Something happened on one occasion that changed him into another personality. From that point on not only was his personality changed but also his mode of life. Along the way many odd situations arise which captivate the attention of the reader, causing him or her to wonder what is going to happen next. The main character sees needs in his home town, needs to which no other citizen had given a thought. With the tenacity of a pit bull he tackles those needs. Figured in the plot of this book is a woman with the vocabulary of the proverbial sailor but who is a "diamond in the rough". This book is designed for enjoyable reading.
