Coupled dynamics between turbulent and stratified layers are often encountered in geophysical and astrophysical flows, for example in the earth's atmosphere, oceans and core, but also in stars. Due to the large space- and time-scale difference between the phenomenon involved in the two layers, their interaction is sometimes overlooked. Still, the turbulent motions enhance mixing at the interface and generate internal gravity waves which propagate in the stratified layer. Those waves extract energy from the convective layer and distribute this energy along their propagation path. They also carry chemicals and bio-elements. Therefore, the comprehension of the coupled dynamics of a turbulent layer interacting with a stratification one is essential in order to build reliable models predicting the long-time evolution of those flows. This interaction is studied with experiments, numerical simulations and theoretical modelling.

Gravity waves exist in all types of geophysical fluids, such as lakes, oceans, and atmospheres. They play an important role in redistributing energy at disturbances, such as mountains or seamounts and they are routinely studied in meteorology and oceanography, particularly simulation models, atmospheric weather models, turbulence, air pollution, and climate research. An Introduction to Atmospheric Gravity Waves provides readers with a working background of the fundamental physics and mathematics of gravity waves, and introduces a wide variety of applications and numerous recent advances. Nappo provides a concise volume on gravity waves with a lucid discussion of current observational techniques and instrumentation. An accompanying website contains real data, computer codes for data analysis, and linear gravity wave models to further enhance the reader's understanding of the book's material. Companion web site features animations and streaming video Foreword by George Chimonas, a renowned expert on the interactions of gravity waves with turbulence Includes a new application-based component for use in climate and weather predictions

This is a book which will be welcomed not only by researchers and engineers, but also by teachers and students, as it contains the only comprehensive review of the dynamics of ocean waves. Existing books are now either out of date or restricted to specialized aspects of the subject, whereas this book covers all types of ocean waves, ranging from capillary to planetary waves. Because of its completeness of coverage, its use of elementary mathematics and the provision of numerous problems and exercises, the book will be an indispensable text for everyone. It is completed by a very lengthy bibliography which includes many references to the Russian literature.
