This book presents a methodology for the development and computer implementation of dynamic models for transport process systems. Rather than developing the general equations of transport phenomena, it develops the equations required specifically for each new example application. These equations are generally of two types: ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs) for which time is an independent variable. The computer-based methodology presented is general purpose and can be applied to most applications requiring the numerical integration of initial-value ODEs/PDEs. A set of approximately two hundred applications of ODEs and PDEs developed by the authors are listed in Appendix 8.

This textbook offers an introduction to multiple, interdependent transport phenomena as they occur in various fields of physics and technology like transport of momentum, heat, and matter. These phenomena are found in a number of combined processes in the fields of chemical, food, biomedical, and environmental sciences. The book puts a special emphasis on numerical modeling of both purely diffusive mechanisms and macroscopic transport such as fluid dynamics, heat and mass convection. To favor the applicability of the various concepts, they are presented with a simplicity of exposure, and synthesis has been preferred with respect to completeness. The book includes more than 130 graphs and figures, to facilitate the understanding of the various topics. It also presents many modeling examples throughout the text, to control that the learned material is properly understood. There are some typos in the text. This book is unique as the first effort to expound on the subject of systematic scaling analysis. Not written for a specific discipline, the book targets any reader interested in transport phenomena and reaction processes. The book is logically divided into chapters on the use of systematic scaling analysis in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, and reaction processes. An integrating chapter is included that considers more complex problems involving combined transport phenomena. Each chapter includes several problems that are explained in considerable detail. These are followed by several worked examples for which the general outline for the scaling is given. Each chapter also includes many practice problems. This book is based on recognizing the value of systematic scaling analysis as a pedagogical method for teaching transport and reaction processes and as a research tool for developing and solving models and in designing experiments. Thus, the book can serve as both a textbook and a reference book.

Freight Transport Modelling is a unique new reference book that provides insight into the state-of-the-art of freight modelling. Focusing on models used to support public transport policy analysis, Freight Transport Modelling systematically introduces the latest freight transport modelling approaches and describes the main methods and techniques used to arrive at operational models. As freight transport has grown exponentially in recent decades, policymakers now need to include freight flows in quantitative evaluations of transport systems. Whereas early freight modelling practice was inspired by passenger transport models, by now it has developed its separate stream of methods and techniques inspired by disciplines such as economic geography and supply chain management. Besides summarizing the latest achievements in fundamental research, this book describes the state of practice and advises practitioners on how to cope with typical challenges such as limitations in data availability. - Uniquely focused book exploring the key issues and logistics of freight transport modelling - Highlights the latest approaches and describes the main methods and techniques used to arrive at operational models - Summarizes fundamental research into freight transport modeling, as well as current practices and advice for practitioners facing day-to-day challenges

Modeling of Microscale Transport in Biological Processes provides a compendium of recent advances in theoretical and computational modeling of biotransport phenomena at the microscale. The simulation strategies presented range from molecular to continuum models and consider both numerical and exact solution method approaches to coupled systems of equations. The biological processes covered in this book include digestion, molecular transport, microbial swimming, cilia mediated flow, microscale heat transfer, micro-vascular flow, vesicle dynamics, transport through bio-films and bio-membranes, and microscale growth dynamics. The book is written for an advanced academic research audience in the fields of engineering (encompassing biomedical, chemical, biological, mechanical, and electrical), biology and mathematics. Although written for, and by, expert researchers, each chapter provides a strong introductory section to ensure accessibility to readers at all levels.

Transport Modeling for Environmental Engineers and Scientists, Second Edition, builds on integrated transport courses in chemical engineering curricula, demonstrating the underlying unity of mass and momentum transport processes. It describes how these processes underlie the mechanics common to both pollutant transport and pollution control processes.

This book is an ensemble of six major chapters, an introduction, and a closure on modeling transport phenomena in porous media with applications. Two of the six chapters explain the underlying theories, whereas the rest focus on new applications. Porous media transport is essentially a multi-scale process. Accordingly, the related theory described in the second and third chapters covers both continuum‐ and meso‐scale phenomena. Examining the continuum formulation imparts rigor to the empirical porous media models, while the mesoscopic model focuses on the physical processes within the pores. Porous media models are discussed in the context of a few important engineering applications. These include biomedical problems, gas hydrate reservoirs, regenerators, and fuel cells. The discussion reveals the strengths and weaknesses of existing models as well as future research directions.

The All-in-One Guide to Mass Transport Phenomena: From Theory to Examples and Computation Mass transfer processes exist in practically all engineering fields and many biological systems; understanding them is essential for all chemical engineering students, and for practitioners in a broad range of practices, such as biomedical engineering, environmental engineering, material engineering, and the like. Mass Transfer Processes combines a modern, accessible introduction to modeling and computing these processes with demonstrations of their application in designing reactors and separation systems. P. A. Ramachandran’s integrated approach balances all the knowledge readers need to be effective, rather than merely paying lip service to some crucial topics. He covers both analytical and numerical solutions to mass transfer problems, demonstrating numerical problem-solving with widely used software packages, including MATLAB and CHEBFUN. Throughout, he links theory to realistic examples, both traditional and contemporary. Theory, examples, and in-depth coverage of differential, macroscopic, and mesoscopic modeling Physical chemistry aspects of diffusion phenomena Film models for calculating local mass transfer rates and diffusional interaction in gas–solid and gas–liquid reaction systems Application of mass transfer models in rate-based separation processes, and systems with simultaneous heat and mass transfer Convective mass transfer: empirical correlation, internal and external laminar flows, and turbulent flows Heterogeneous systems, from laminar flow reactors, diffusion-reaction models, reactive membranes, and electrochemical reactors Computations of mass transfer effects in multicomponent systems Solid–gas noncatalytic reactions for chemical, metallurgical, environmental, and electronic processes Applications in electrochemical and biomedical systems Design calculations for humidification, drying, and condensation systems and membrane-based separations Analysis of adsorption, chromatography, electrodialysis, and electrophoresis
