Excerpt from Illustrated Catalogue of Rare and Beautiful Early American and Colonial Furniture, an Extraordinary Gathering of Hooked Rugs and Other Contemporaneous Treasures Collected During Many Years by the Amateur Mrs. F. H. Davis of Flushing, L. I: To Be Sold at Unrestricted Public Sale for Account of the Owner on the Afternoons Herein Stated It has seldom fallen to my lot to pass under review such a characteristic collection of Early American furniture and domes tic objects as that belonging to Mrs. F. H. Davis, of Flushing, L. I. Since her earliest years, it seems that Mrs. Davis has col lected, and as her chief regard has always been for the old - time things of our ancestors, it has followed, as a natural consequence, that she has accumulated, in the many years lying between, an extraordinarily large number of Early American things which, thanks to her knowledge and unerring judgment, are beyond all question or cavil as to their genuineness. Colonial is what these objects are somewhat loosely termed, but this name is correctly applied only to furniture, etc., made during the first three-quar ters of the eighteenth century, either in this country or across the ocean, and Early American will be found to be a much more truthful, as well as judicious, method of naming a large portion of them. It will be noticed that a large majority of Mrs. Davis's possessions were procured in New England, a fact mainly due to the circumstances that she is a Maine woman born and bred, and that the field of her activities has lain chiefly in those North eastern States we are accustomed to know as New England. Particularly striking, for instance, will be found the gathering of early Hooked Rugs. Owing to their fascinating colors, often due to the dyeing of the yarn by the native Indians, the naivete of their design and their admirable wearing qualities, these domestic rugs have lately come into high favor. There are those still liv ing, by the way, Whose girlish energies were largely devoted to the hooking of these rugs, but all of those here offered date from the beginning of the nineteenth century.
