Excerpt from A History of the Rise, Progress, and Suppression of the Rebellion in the County of Wexford, in the Year 1798: To Which Is Annexed the Author's Account of His Captivity, and Merciful Deliverance Having had various Opportunities Of knowing the progress of the Rebellion in the County of Wexford, being also for some weeks a prisoner among the rebels, and several times during that period upon the verge of death, many of my friends requested that I would draw up a History of that Rebellion as far as I knew. This I declined for various reasons, but chiefly on account of my want Of talents for such an undertaking. The repeated solicitations of my friends, and the assurance that a spurious Narrative of the Rebellion was to come out in my name, at length prevailed on me to make my appearance in this public manner. In the undertaking I have been assisted by some intelligent persons, who had much information on the subject. What I have related may be depended upon as matters of fact; for I would not, under any con sideration, knowingly advance an untruth, to extenuate the guilt, or aggravate the crime Of friend or foe.
