Excerpt from An Historical Geography of the Bible In common with all who have an interest in this subject, the author is under peculiar obligations to Dr. Robinson, for his invaluable Biblical Researches in Palestine. This has become a standard work in Biblical geography, from which all must freely draw, either directly or indirectly, who treat of the localities which come within the range of his travels and his searching investigations. Excerpt from Historical Geography of the Bible The great importance of Bible Geography appears when we consider that the correct understanding of the Sacred Narrative is often dependent upon a knowledge of geographical locations. No geography is so valuable to us as that connected with the Holy Scriptures, and yet I think we are safe in saying that it is the least studied of all geography. When we read of a city, an empire, a moun tain, a plain, a river, or a sea, we naturally form some idea of its location. To form right ideas of such things is an inestimable help to the understanding of the events of the Bible, and to form wrong ideas of geographical locations often leads to error in the interpretation of the Scriptures. The contents of the following pages should not prove tedious nor uninteresting, for every place under consideration is in some way re lated to the history of the chosen people of God, and most of the places are associated directly or indirectly with the walks and works of our Master. The minutest details connected with the sacred narratives of the Bible seem impor tant and alive with interest to those who love and long for truth. The plan of this book is to combine just enough of history with geography to make the latter interesting and profitable The Bible student will find a good wall map of Palestine invaluable as an accompaniment of this volume. The contents of this volume were first pre pared as a text-book in Bible Geography and used by the writer in teaching a class of about eighty young men and women. At the request of many who happened to see those lesson sheets, the course is now given to the public, in this form. Excerpt from An Historical Text Book and Atlas of Biblical Geography Of our schools, has no place in our public systems of education. What school or academy, even when proposing a course of study peculiarly select and religious - what system of Public Edu cation - what College or Theological Seminary even, includes in its 'plan of study the Geography and History Of the Bible? How many, accordingly, read the Scriptures daily, and for half a century profess to expound them it may be, without any just conception of the localities and scenery of Bethlehem, of Nazareth, of Capernaum, of Jerusalem, of the Mount of Olives, or of dark Gethsemane - localities and scenes around which cluster the most hallowed associations of the Christian. The following work is the result of an humble effort and an earnest desire to associate together, for reasons which have been briefly indicated, the History and Geography of the Scriptures, and to allure the young and assist them in an interested and intelligent perusal of the Book of God. Whatever may be the consideration in which this text book itself shall be held, we claim that the subject of it undeniably ought to have a place, not only in the Bible-class and Sunday school, but in the primary and grammar school, the college and the theological seminary. Excerpt from Biblical Geography and History The difficulties and expense of Palestine travel, however, ren der such a journey impossible for the majority of Bible students. Fortunately, the marvellous development of that most valuable aid to modern education, the stereoscope and the stereograph, make it possible for every one at a comparatively small expense to visit Palestine and to gain under expert guidance in many ways a clearer and more exact knowledge of the background of bib lical history and literature than he would through months of travel. Through the courtesy of my publishers and the co operation of the well-known firm of Underwood Underwood, of New York and London, I have been able to realize an ideal that I have long cherished, and to place at the disposal of the readers of this volume one hundred and forty stereographs (or, if preferred for class and lecture use, stereopticon slides) that illustrate the most important events of biblical geography and history. They have been selected from over five hundred views taken especially for this purpose, and enable the student to gain, as he alone can through the stereoscope, the distinct state of consciousness of being in scores of historic places rarely visited even by the most venturesome travellers. Numbers referring to these stereographs (or stereopticon slides) have been inserted in the body of the text. In Appendix II the titles corresponding to each number are given.
