Aquaculture in the United States is a significant agribusiness industry, but it is also a troubled one whose future is clouded by doubt. Many aquaculture practices, such as deliberately introducing exotic species, hatcheries programs, and pen culture in protected waters have come under intense attack from environmentalists. Economic pressures on the industry from the value of coastal land, the unavailability of suitable supplies of water, and the legal costs of regulations have restricted growth. This book looks at the past, present and future of a troubled industry.

The overall objective of this study was to estimate the cost of producing freshwater shrimp post larvae. The synthetic firm approach was used to derive the investment and operating costs for the hatchery and nursery phases. The ability to produce two separate hatches was assumed. The data for this study was acquired from research personnel, suppliers, and contractors. Costs for producing new post-larvae were $8.64 per 1,000 shrimp. Of this amount, $1.95 can be allocated to annual ownership costs, and $6.69 can be attributed to annual operating costs. From the study, we can conclude that producing Macrobrachium rosenbergii post-larvae is sufficiently lower than prevailing commercial rates. If associated marketing and transportation costs are as expected, potential savings can be passed on to the producers of market size shrimp if the assumptions employed are correct.
