Andrology, the science of the physiology, pathology and molecular biology of male reproduction, is a relatively new specialty that has become increasingly important with the advent of modern assisted reproductive techniques (ART). The Atlas of Clinical Andrology describes both normal and abnormal reproductive physiology, and summarizes recent research in the fields of endocrinology, immunoandrology, molecular andrology, and ART. Focusing on the cutting edge of recent knowledge and advances in clinical andrology, it incorporates the latest clinical research findings and makes them accessible to clinicians who need this essential information for the most effective application of assisted reproductive techniques.

This atlas deals with conditions commonly encountered in the male genital tract. Whilst the majority of illustra tions are photomicrographs, photographs of macro scopic specimens are also used to illustrate important features in distinguishing different pathological con ditions. Special emphasis is placed on the small biopsy specimens obtained from prostate and testis in modern urological practice and the importance of clinico pathological co-operation in pathological practice is stressed. Recent advances in our knowledge of testicu lar tumours are discussed and illustrated. The text is not entirely descriptive and attempts to give an intellectual framework around which histopathological diagnosis in this field can be practised. A modest number of references are included; they have not been singled out as representing milestones in the development of our knowledge of these conditions - the choice has rather more centred upon recent reports from which a litera ture search can be mounted if required. The atlas in no way pretends to be an encyclopaedic reference of con ditions of the male genital tract but attempts to provide an up-to-date comprehensive discussion of the histo pathology of this system. Acknowledgements I am most grateful to Mr Keith Gordon for developing all the photomicrographs and to Mr Geoff Gilbert and his staff in the Audio-Visual Department of the City Hospital who took the majority of the macroscopic illustrations. I must particularly thank my secretary, Mrs Dorothy Clay ton, for typing and retyping my draft chapters and for deciphering my hieroglyphics.

The male reproductive system, which is made up of the testes, scrotum, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate gland, bulbourethral gland, ejaculatory duct, urethra, and penis, functions mainly in the production, nourishment, and temporary storage of spermatozoa. Epigenetic modifications are essential to regulate normal gonadal development and spermatogenesis. The sperm epigenome is highly susceptible influence by a wide spectrum of environmental stimuli. This book focuses on the male reproductive system, discussing topics ranging from aspects of anatomy and risk factors for male infertility to clinical techniques and management of male reproductive health.

Written by experts in their respective fields, this book reviews the expanding knowledge concerning the mechanisms regulating male reproduction at the molecular and cellular levels. It covers the development of the testes and regulatory controls for spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis, and it considers aspects of Sertoli cell function. Areas of emphasis include communication between the various cell types involved in reproduction by hormone and growth factors and the mechanisms by which these factors regulate gene expression. A number of mammalian systems, including humans, are covered. The carefully selected authors provide a clear synopsis of the concepts in each area as well as the latest references, enabling the reader to investigate the topic further. This book is of interest to those seeking an understanding of the regulatory mechanisms in male reproduction and is written for the graduate and postgraduate levels. Provides up-to-date reviews of the molecular and cellular biology of male reproduction Includes chapters on the developmental biology of the testes Links conventional hormonal control of testicular function with the evolving role of growth factors and proto-oncogenes

Atlas on the Human Testis: Normal Morphology and Pathology presents histological illustrative material from paraffin and semi-thin sections of the human testis which are routinely used in the assessment of testicular morphology, allowing an early detection of carcinoma in situ and more advanced pathological changes of the testicular parenchyma. The early detection of cancer in situ is based on the careful morphological investigation of the biopsy and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Therefore, this atlas contains detailed descriptions of IHC methods as well as modern molecular biological methods such as DNA microarrays and proteomics and advanced microscopy techniques related to the testicular biopsy. Adequate evaluation of the testicular biopsy leads to high cure rates of testicular neoplasms which can be used as a basis to successfully treat infertility in men. Atlas on the Human Testis: Normal Morphology and Pathology is a valuable reference tool which will appeal to andrologists, urologists, pathologists, clinical embryologists, as well as reproductive biology scientists.

An Introduction to Male Reproductive Medicine is written specifically for readers seeking entry into this fast-moving, complex specialty with a solid understanding of the subject. The first chapters cover the anatomy and physiology, clinical evaluation, surgery, medicine, genetics and laboratory testing involved in the current evaluation and treatment of the infertile male, and the final chapter describes the interaction of the field with female reproductive medicine. Throughout the book, references are directly made to the fourth edition of the major text in the specialty, Infertility in the Male, edited by Larry Lipshultz, Stuart Howards and Craig Niederberger, allowing readers to expand their understanding of specific areas where desired. Each chapter is written by a well-renowned expert in an easy to follow, informal style, making the text ideal for students, residents and general physicians who are seeking to increase their general knowledge of the field.
