Every winter between 1836 to 1879 small wooden boats left the bays of southwest Western Australia to hunt for migrating Humpback and Right whales. In the early years of European settlement these small shore whaling parties and the whale oil they produced were an important part of the colonial economy, yet over time their significance diminished until they virtually vanished from the documentary record. Using archival research and archaeological evidence, The Shore Whalers of Western Australia examines the history and operation of this almost forgotten industry on the remote maritime frontier of the British Empire and the role of the whalers in the history of early contact between Europeans and Aboriginal people. Dr Martin Gibbs is a senior lecturer in the Department of Archaeology of the University of Sydney and the President of the Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology.

In the early 1980s the author was asked to investigate the newly discovered wreck of the Xantho, an iron screw steamship active off the Australian coast during the period 1848 to 1872, and to develop a strategy to stop the looting that was occurring at the site. This relatively straightforward assignment turned into a long-term research program for applying maritime archaeology to the conservation of iron-hulled wrecks.

This project conducted extensive archival research and a preliminary pre-disturbance survey of the archaeological site of the 19th century shore-based whaling station at Gaultois in Hermitage Bay in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The site is located on Whale (Lamy) Island at the entrance to Gaultois Harbour, approximately 150 m north-east of the public wharf at Gaultois township. Preliminary archival research indicated that this was a successful and long-lasting operation that is potentially directly comparable with whaling operations in the Australian colonies that operated over a similar time period and fits neatly into the comparative phase of the AWSANZ (Archaeology of Whaling in Southern Australia and New Zealand) project.
