Excerpt from An Appeal to the Medical Profession of the United States While at the same time the least sagacious could have seen that should he raise his bristles, they were ready to crouch to him, with a sycophancy at which oriental adulation would blush. While things were in this condition, and even before, I emphatically declared to many individuals that I would not submit to the dictation of Dr. Dudley, and that the moment I received positive proof that the proper concessions were not to be expected from him, I would resign. Excerpt from Second Edition of an Appeal to the Medical Profession of the United States: Together With an Analysis and Refutation of the "Statements of Facts in Relation to the Expulsion of James C. Cross From the Transylvania University" I repeat, that while 1 am aware I shall have no more chance in this community than pain a discretion, in the hands of a French man, I would have been content to suffer in silence, until my sppeal could have been made under better auspices, but this has not been permitted. The conduct of my tormentors and persecutors has been such as to make fur ther forbearance on my part, a criminal and pusillanimous desertion of duty. Since I left it, the Medical Department of Transylvania University has sunk into utter insignificance, and promises soon to enable its enemies to ex claim in insolent triumph Trqja fuit: When it shall have ceased to be, and all knowledge of its existence shall have dwindled into a legend of tradition, I Will be able to say, and with a clear conscience, to the deluded and betrayed people of Lexington. Excerpt from An Appeal to the Public, by Members of the Medical Profession We desire your attention for a moment to a subject that concerns us all. About twelve years ago it was discovered that physical torture was no longer a necessary accompaniment of the surgeon's knife, and that generations yet to be born might come into the world unattended by the pain and dread which had caused tears to flow since the expulsion from Eden that, by a few inspirations of a simple vapor, the most acute pangs of human suffering, whether from wound or sickness, might be quieted and laid asleep. Twelve years of experience have proved this, and that it is one of the greatest medical discoveries the world has ever known. Our National Government, competent institutions, and the great bulk of the medical profession, after most careful and patient investigation, have declared by whom this all-important fact was brought to light and promulgated. Their decision stands unshaken, notwithstanding the most persevering efforts of rival contestants. Yet, strange to say, to this day, it would have been vastly better for its author, his wife, and their children, if he had buried the secret, and permitted ages more to pass before it came to light. Excerpt from An Appeal to the Medical Profession in Brooklyn, in Behalf of Those Afflicted With Deafness and Other Diseases of the Ear: Being an Essay Read Before the "Medico Chirurgical Society," August 24th, 1857 I have always thought that, in our schools every mode of lecturing has been unduly exalted above cli nical lecturing; and every place where knowledge is to be had, or is supposed to be had, has been unduly pre ferred to the bed-side - and I continue to think this. Excerpt from The Future of Medicine in the United States But there is a still more cogent reason why we should accept this responsibility, namely, because we are now ready and able to take the place we should hold in medicine. The war has brought about far-reaching changes in the country. It has, as Lord F rench says, made a nation of us. Under the great leadership of President Wilson the whole essence of our destiny has been crystallized, and we move forward unified by a national consciousness, no longer North or South, or East or West, but one people irresistible in the resolve to accomplish our purpose. The war has brought about far-reaching changes in medicine because we have gained a national consciousness. The country no longer regards medicine merely as a learned profession, but is coming to consider it one of the essential indus tries. Sound public health is a necessary element in the will to Victory. The civil population unduly enfeebled by disease or discouraged by neglect cannot be expected to support a winning army. A11 signs give assurance that the government in its wisdom will provide adequate medical attention for the people, prevent relaxation in the safeguards against epidemics, and restrict the spread of disease to the limits normal in peace-time. In another critical relation the efforts of the medical profession have become indispensable to final success. The vast detail of the health of an army is in the hands of its medical corps. F ailure here is almost as serious as defeat by the enemy. The selection of the fit and rejection of the unfit, the supervision of sanitation, the prevention of disease, the stamping out of epidemics, the early detection of the physically and mentally unstable, to say nothing of adequate care and reconstruction of the sick and wounded, are matters of vital importance to troops in the field. The war has shown us the possibilities of medicine carried out intensively in all its branches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. You enter, my friends, upon your career, with the certainty of immediate usefulness; for although more extended observa tion of disease will impart greater confidence and skill, you have acquired a knowledge of those great principles in medi cine which assemble the facts and the experience of ages, and which, especially, are to form your guide in the treatment of disease. Excerpt from The Debt of the Public to the Medical Profession Among other diseases which have been investigated with very fruitful results is tuberculosis, a disease which ranks with alcoholism and syphilis as the three most disastrous to the human race, and, in the case of tuber culosis, to animals as well as man. To Robert Koch, of Berlin, a physician, belongs the credit of discovering and of proving absolutely its cause, namely, the bacillus tuberculosis. While it is perfectly true that this has not yet led to the hoped-for results in the cure of the disease, yet all must admit that the discovery of the cause of any disorder is the first step toward its cure. Moreover, the results, even from a diagnostic and thera peutie standpoint, have been by no means insignificant. Excerpt from The Relations of the Medical Profession to the State: Being the Anniversary Discourse Delivered Before the Medical Society of the State of New York, February Fifth, 1879 The country in which we live is still a new one. Many of our forests are primitive and much of our soil is uncultivated. Even in our oldest States we may see regions upon which man, by his residence and labor, seems hardly to have made a sensible effect. We have scarcely any of the garden-like cultivation of England, we have no wood-parks like Ardennes and Fontainebleau, no gray towers on our river banks, and few of the broad and hard highways over which Moltke's armies marched to Sedan and Paris. In our vast country there is a constantly recurring impression of newness, and, in a certain sense, of roughness. I am not unmindful of what we have achieved in the way of invention, manufacture, commerce, and culture. I merely wish to recall to your minds a fact that we are all perhaps inclined to forget, namely, that we are still a new people in a new land. We cannot inherit the fullness of cultivation of the older peoples in our intellectual work any more than in the cultivation of our soil. Our relations as individuals or as guilds and professions, to each other and to the government, must of necessity be different from those which obtain among older nations with their centuries of history and of tradition. In Europe there has been time for many things to arrange themselves into a refined system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Appeal in Behalf of the Medical Education of Women Women also lack the proper guidance in medical studies which the young man finds in his preceptor, and in a long established system of edu cation. They do not know what they need themselves, for they have little idea of what is implied in a medical education, and know not to whom to apply for direction. The ordinary physician does not at all realizeto practise as best they can. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
