Excerpt from An Appeal to the Jewish People It is true, I have penetrated far into the Holy of Holies; I have boldly - my enemies say madly crossed the Rubicon, and trodden an unfrequented path, hitherto shunned like the pest by every Jew, and especially bv their Rabbis. I have paid homage to the founder of Christianity, and rendered Him praise as the Redeemer of the the Saviour, the long-expected Messiah of the Jews. But, humanly speaking, do not our eventful, truly epochal times, require extraordinary means, bold thoughts, and thorough reforms? Are not new men now more than ever needed, who, conscious of the purpose oftheir being, shall be as new_channels of good to all peoples of every family and race? And is not this also the need 'of Israel? Scattered in all the world, fallen out in himself and with himself, dismembered, disunited Israel, who has yearned so longingly, and yet in vain, for the coming of the Angel of the Covenantl' \vhat! Who! Can effect the regeneration and resurrection of Israel? W ho shall bring to pass the prophesied miracle of Ezekiel? (xxxvii.) Excerpt from Christianity and the Jew: An Appeal to the Church of Christ, to Preach the Gospel to the Jew It is with no little trepidation and anxiety that this unpretentious volume is sent forth. This little book and I have had many pleasant hours together. We have chatted by the fireside, we have walked in the moonlight, and have lain on the same pillow. We have been companions together for many long and weary months. Christianity and the Jew is the child of prayer. Years ago, in my youth, I formed a deep and lasting admiration for the Jewish people. I loved the heroic in the races Of men, and no history gripped me with such force as that Of the Jews. When a Child they played for me in the role Of warriors, and I stood with them on many a battle field; when in college they played for me in the role Of the torch-bearers Of civilization; but now they are playing for me in Jehovah's plan of the world's redemption through Jesus Christ. Excerpt from The Jewish Contribution to Civilization To anyone capable of harboring thoroughgoing anti Semitism - a group prejudice, that is, directed against a whole race of human beings - this book is probably too intelligent to make an effective appeal. Such vulgar and barbarian race prejudice is not only without rootage in anthropology, without support in the social sciences, and incredible to normal men and women; it is, from the standpoint of morals, one of the most debasing of human attitudes. As H. G. Wells has written, I am convinced myself that there is no more evil thing in this present world than race prejudice, none at all. I write deliberately - it is the worst single thing in life now. It justifies and holds together more baseness, cruelty and abomination than any other sort of error in the world. Events in Europe have terribly validated this judgment, and in America the repercussions of foreign anti-semitism are too frequent and menacing to be neglected. Excerpt from Out of Kishineff: The Duty of the American People to the Russian Jew While the author has a hope that the treatment he has made of this subject will meet the approval of American Jews, as they study the welfare of their race, it has been undertaken more specifically as a form of appeal to the humane and liberty-loving Americans who believe in the application of the Golden Rule, and who may be moved to add the emphasis of the disapproval of a great and free people against race persecution in all its degrees and forms. If I have sometimes given expression to my condemnation fervidly, those who have the capacity to feel strongly when they see weakness oppressed, or intolerance and cruelty triumphant, will not, in view of the facts, be likely to find the fervor excessive. Excerpt from Zionism and the Jewish Diaspora The special place which the land of Israel occupied in the spiritual as well as in their national life was, of course, part of that religious discipline which, like the people, was intended to serve a higher purpose. But it is only necessary to refer to the great Prophets of Israel, who proclaimed the universality of His sway, to realise that the land of Israel was indeed regarded as a priceless possession. It was not only, in the words of Deuteronomy, a land which the Lord thy God careth for always are the eyes of the Lord thy God upon it (deut. Xi., or in the appeal of the psalmist, For thy servants take pleasure in her stones and favour the dust thereo (ps. Cii., but it is out of Zion that the Law shall go forth to the nations of the earth. The second Isaiah, the. Most universalistic of the Prophets, hailed also in most exalted strain the triumphant return of the exiled people to its own land. Excerpt from An Appeal to the Citizens of New-York, in Behalf of the Christian Sabbath We urge too, and we think irresistibly, the introduc tion of a precept, requiring the observance of this day, into the moral law. The distinction between the cere monial and moral law, consists in this: the ceremoni al law directed the peculiar policy and worship of the Jewish nation - it prescribed the rites and ceremonies un der the Mosaic dispensation exclusively - such as the offering of sacrifices, the worship of the temple, the cele bration of the passover, the feast of Pentecost, and the feasts of Purim and Dedication. The moral law is that de claration of the will of God, which directs and binds all men, in every age and place, to their whole duty to him. It is comprised in what are usually called the Ten Com mandments. The ceremonial law was temporary, and is repealed; the moral is permanent, and unrepealable. The former Was superseded and abolished, at the introduction of the Christian dispensation; the latter endures for ever. The moral law is the code which our Lord affirms he came not to destroy, but to fulfil, and of which he so solemnly declares, Heaven and earth shall pass away, but not one jet or one tittle of the law shall fail. And yet, in this grand moral code, you find the precept, remember the sabbath day TO keep IT holy. There is no solemnity, obligation, or permanency, here imparted to the first, the second, the third precept, or either of the ten, which does not belong equally to the fourth. You may as well deny the perpetual obligation of the whole, as that which insists on the observance of the Sabbath day.
