The Indian banking industry is currently facing challenges to implement the capital regulations specified under Basel III norms. In implementing the new capital regulations, the financial stability of banks plays an important role. The banks which are in a sound financial position can easily implement the new regulations, but it is difficult for the financially weaker banks to determine the required capital as per the international norms. Thus, financial analysis has become the need of the hour for the banking sector to identify the financial position. In this context, evaluating the financial health of Indian bank has become compulsory to compete with the environmental changes. In this context, it is quite important to study the solvency position of Indian banks. The present study intends to analyze the financial health of selected Indian commercial banks through the application of Altman Z-score model. It is found that the financial health of the selected banks under study is strong and satisfactory.

Introduction 1. Context Building: One of the crucial macroeconomic areas, which has been at the center of the focus in India nearly for the past three decades, is the soundness and efficiency of the Indian banking system. It is now well recognized the world over that a well-functioning banking sector is a pivotal hinge on which hinges the stability of the financial system. The stability of the financial system defines the growth prospects of the economy and the pace of growth that could be realized. A greater realization of this fact in the post-1990 economic scenario has been keeping the Indian banking system at the center of the focus of the policy planners and Government. With the passage of time, the focus on the banking system is getting accentuated by two major factors- the growing universalization of banking operations and increasing internationalization of banking operations.

The analysis focuses on examining the behavior and determinants of bank intermediation costs and profitability during the liberalization period. The empirical results suggest that ownership type has a significant effect on some performance indicators and that the observed increase in competition during financial liberalization has been associated with lower intermediation costs and profitability of the Indian banks.

This paper explores the linkage between strategic grouping and performance of the Indian banking sector. Strategic grouping and performance were identified using published financial information for all public sector banks. Grouping of Indian public sector banks following comparable financial strategy - with similar asset quality, operational efficiency and profitability was operationalized using the graphical display method of Co-plot. From their position in the two dimensional conceptual map, banks with identical financial performance formed strategic groups with significant positive linkage between better groups and their superior financial performance, which showed their inherent homogeneity in business policy decisions. Relative performance of the banks in terms of their efficiency in converting the resources to financial outputs was obtained using data envelopment analysis technique. The measures for potential financial improvements were obtained from the output slacks calculated. Efficient banks were found to be more profitable and their grouping as observed in the efficiency-profitability matrix was found to be identical to the strategic groups obtained using financial ratios. This paper offers a framework to commercial banks to make informed policy decisions about their competitive positioning in the target market, develop long-term strategic focus and identify a benchmark for improving their performance.

The goal of this book is to assess the efficacy of India’s financial deregulation programme by analyzing the developments in cost efficiency and total factor productivity growth across different ownership types and size classes in the banking sector over the post-deregulation years. The work also gauges the impact of inclusion or exclusion of a proxy for non-traditional activities on the cost efficiency estimates for Indian banks, and ranking of distinct ownership groups. It also investigates the hitherto neglected aspect of the nature of returns-to-scale in the Indian banking industry. In addition, the work explores the key bank-specific factors that explain the inter-bank variations in efficiency and productivity growth. Overall, the empirical results of this work allow us to ascertain whether the gradualist approach to reforming the banking system in a developing economy like India has yielded the most significant policy goal of achieving efficiency and productivity gains. The authors believe that the findings of this book could give useful policy directions and suggestions to other developing economies that have embarked on a deregulation path or are contemplating doing so.

The performances of public sector banks have become more market driven with growing emphasis placed on profitability. Though there is a phenomenal development in both public and private sector banks in India after reforms yet the private sector is still lagging behind comparatively in this study. With the nationalization of the most of the major commercial banks in 1969, restrictions on entry and expansion of private and foreign banks were gradually increased. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) also began enforcing uniform interest rates, spreads and service changes among nationalized banks. The success of our giant five year plan is dependent, among other things on the smooth and satisfactory performance of the role by banking industry of our country. Banks thus pay special attention in financing business of innovation for providing cheap and adequate credit. And this is done by different private and public sector banks in money market in our country. Since 1992-93, the structure of the Indian banking system has undergone significant changes in terms of scope, opportunities and operational buoyancy. The commercial banks have been facing and increasing degree of competition in the intermediation process from term lending institutions, non-banking intermediaries, chit funds and the capital market. Besides, new banking services like ATM and internet banking have been emerged due to the advancement of computers and information technology.
