Although I consider myself one of the very hum blest of the gallant few, who have stepped forward in the good work of Medical Reform in North Caro lina, to perform the tasks of hope in the midst of despair, yet I have not felt at liberty, from any considerations, however gratifying to me personally, to shrink from the discharge of the responsible duty which your partiality has assigned me. Excerpt from An Address Before the Medical Society of North Carolina: At Its Second Annual Meeting, in Raleigh, May 1851 However, I shall not discuss here the legal privileges, nor the cherished errors Of these Charlatans, who are so well versed in the f'gospel of enlightened selfishness as to deny the importance of every consideration, the value of which they cannot estimate in dol lars and cents. Nothing is to be made by an argument with or a bout them. That sort of gratuitous advertisement would only en able them the more readily to climb up into public View, confident, in their own minds, that the application of the Old adage, who shall decide when Doctors disagree, could not result to their dis advantage. It will not be expected of me, therefore, to occupy your time with any further allusion to them particularly, as I de sire to make a few remarks, before I pass on to the consideration of the proper subject of this essay, in defence of the profession of medicine, the peculiar advantages we possess for prosecuting the study of it successfully, and in praise of those noble spirits who bring to the practice of their art, learning, humanity, discretion and integrity, the four cardinal virtues of a really deserving physician. Excerpt from An Address Before the Medical Society of the State of North Carolina, at Its First Annual Communication, in Raleigh, April, 1850 Permit me to allude to a few of the extravagant appendages of the medical profession - Homepathy and Hydropathy - sys tems containing some truth, though largely diluted with error. The inappreciable doses of Homcepathy is a pretty apt illustra tion of the expectant plan of treating disease, and operate like doses of confidence, which are often of signal advantage. Who would at this day renounce cold water as a Therupeutic agent? Yet how vain the attempt to invest it with the virtues of a pana cea - vainer still the attempt to dignify Hydropathy with the appellation of science Heat and Steam are also valuable agents, but admit not of that universal application in the practice of medicine, which is claimed for them by the misguided and fa natical Thompsonian. C., May 25, 1870 The flight of another year, with its joys and sorrows, again assembles us to the needed works of scientific advance merit and professional improvement. A pleasing task devolves upon me at this happy return of our social and professional reunion. The agreeable duty is imposed upon me of extending to you, as I now do, a cordial welcome to the city of Wilmington. It is not, I assure you, the formal welcome of the tongue alone. It comes warm and fresh from those feelings of cordial greeting and of high appreciation of your presence here, which causes those whom I have the honor to represent to bid me to offer to you the hospitalities of their homes and the best affections of their hearts. We feel honored by your presence and are gratified at this meeting. In entertaining you as our guests the Medical Faculty and citizens Of Wilmington and New Hano ver confidently expect to be improved and elevated by their acquaintance and intercourse with the accomplished and devoted members of this learned Association. Your labors in behalf of medical science and of suffering humanity are nowhere more highly valued than in this section of the State. Our Society has withstood the prejudices and corrosions of time, the conflict of war, and the throes of revolution. After an absence of eighteen years it again convenes in a city where its usefulness is appreciated and its triumphs acknowledged. It is not for us, on an occasion like this, to commend at our own homes the enterprise and material progress of this section, or the worth and services of our leading men. But it is certainly in good taste, even here and now, to state that the Cape Fear country has a heart big enough to embrace, not alone ours and the other learned professions, but the industrial pursuits, material interests and general welfare each and every portion of our noble old commonwealth.
