The province of Kham is one of the remotest regions in in all of Tibet, and its people, the fierce horsemen who for twenty-five years waged a relentless guerilla war against the Chinese occupation, the most elusive. In Among Warriors, Pamela Logan, a recognized expert in the martial arts, gives a breathtaking account of her journey across the windswept plateaus and icy mountain passes of eastern Tibet to find them. Written with vast sympathy for an embattled culture, Logan's vivid evocation of drinking tea with monks and herdsmen, dodging Chinese police, and observing pilgrims making their way toward Lhasa, will captivate anyone interested in Buddhism, the martial arts, or one of the world's last inaccessible regions.

"Somalia is one of the world's most desolate, sun-scorched lands, inhabited by fierce and independent-minded tribesmen. It was here that Gerald Hanley spent the Second World War, charged with preventing bloodshed between feuding tribes at a remote out-station. Rations were scarce, pay infrequent and his detachment of native soldiers near-mutinous." "In these extreme conditions seven British officers committed suicide, but Hanley describes the period as the 'most valuable time' of his life. With intense curiosity and open-mindedness, he explores the effects of loneliness. He comes to understand the Somalis' love of fighting and to admire their contempt for death. 'Of all the races of Africa,' he says, 'there cannot be one better to live among than the most difficult, the proudest, the bravest, the vainest, the most merciless, the friendliest: the Somalis.'"--BOOK JACKET.

“[E]ver until the end — he retired in 1959 — a ‘diplomat among warriors’... this was Bob Murphy’s very special role. I doubt if any other diplomat has ever had an equivalent one. A normal Ambassador is assigned to prevent war or make peace. Much of his diplomacy was the diplomacy of war itself. He was a devoted, first-class public servant, a worthy companion to the great soldiers he accompanied. His memoirs, which include a great deal of fascinating, new historical material, should be widely read.” — C.L. Sulzberger, The New York Times “This important diplomatic memoir provides a wealth of rewarding insights and information about recent events in American foreign relations... Murphy’s lucid and well-written volume will be of great aid to the scholar and of absorbing interest to the general reader.” — Daniel M. Smith, The Journal of Modern History “[Robert Murphy’s] autobiography is more than a personal memoir; it is, in fact, a vivid history of our Foreign Service from an understaffed and inefficient bureau to ‘the finest diplomatic instrument in the world’... It is an important book, consistently readable, and thoroughly deserving to be every bit as long as it is.” — Kirkus “Diplomat Among Warriors gives a substantial account of the author’s participation in the execution of American foreign policy over a period of four eventful decades, 1917-1958... The narrative is interesting, sometimes exciting, and it contains many insights, much soul-searching, and even a few revelations, particularly for the period after 1940. The incisive characterization of actions, actors, and the author’s experiences is more dramatic and revealing than a systematic history could be... Murphy is an unassuming man. But modesty cannot disguise the key role he played in some dramatic events of contemporary history. Diplomat Among Warriors is a warm human story, written with great charm, compassion, and lucidity. It is a useful source for historians and the narrative is fascinating to the general reader.” — Stephen D. Kertesz, The Review of Politics

"... is a street-level view of the struggles of maintaining control in the anarchy that pervaded Iraq after Coalition forces declared victory. Tucker journeyed--and fought--with Special Forces groups in both Mosul and Fallujah, cities unconvinced the war was over, and willing to do anything to ensure that the struggle would continue."--from publisher description.

The riveting story of how a young boy's upbringing with outlaw culture and charismatic role models forged him into an elite Marine and a decorated Pararescueman. "Absence of self is my sword" comprises the final line in "The Warrior's Creed," a 14th century poem written by an unknown Japanese Samurai, and this is the code Master Sergeant Roger Sparks embodied as a Recon Marine turned Alaskan Pararescueman. A living legend in the military, Sparks first made a name for himself within elite Marine Reconnaissance units. He went on to become an instructor where he trained future Reconnaissance Marines with unorthodox and ancient indigenous warrior techniques. A decade later, the same methods would keep him and others alive, when he hoisted into a maelstrom of violence to rescue an embattled platoon in the rugged mountains of eastern Afghanistan. Introduced to a tough code of honor, family, and brotherhood from birth, Roger Sparks rose to become a distinguished instructor in Marine Reconnaissance and a Silver Star recipient as an Alaska Pararescueman. A raw and exhilarating tale of guts, grit, and heart, Warrior's Creed recounts the hidden side of special operations training, heroic and heartbreaking Alaskan wilderness rescues, and the surreal and deadly rescues during Operation Bulldog Bite in Afghanistan’s Watapur Valley. This powerful and inspirational story is as much of a self-help book as it is an edge of your seat military memoir. Warrior's Creed reveals a motivating and mindful approach to overcoming the odds, facing the impossible, and finding mercy and grace in the aftermath.

In 1956, a group of Waorani men killed five North American missionaries in Ecuador. The event cemented the Waorani's reputation as ""wild Amazonian Indians"" in the eyes of the outside world. It also added to the myth of the violent Amazon created by colonial writers and still found in academia and the state development agendas across the region. Victims and Warriors examines contemporary violence in the context of political and economic processes that transcend local events. Casey High explores how popular imagery of Amazonian violence has become part of Waorani social memory in oral histories, folklore performances, and indigenous political activism. As Amazonian forms of social memory merge with constructions of masculinity and other intercultural processes, the Waorani absorb missionaries, oil development, and logging depredations into their legacy of revenge killings and narratives of victimhood. High shows that these memories of past violence form sites of negotiation and cultural innovation, and thus violence comes to constitute a central part of Amazonian sociality, identity, and memory.
