It's the first day of high school and fourteen-year-old Max McCallister already has a problem before the first bell rings: himself. Max spent his last summer of middle school reinventing himself from a bullied loser into... a semi-delusional loser. Now his new strategy is fake it until you make it. The only problem is he can't keep his story straight. Whether it's the douchey star freshman backup quarterback bullying him, the "will they won't they" dynamic with his crush, or his after-school special speech giving brother. Max has a lot on his shoulders, and the least important to him is tomorrow's math test.

Miracles - among other things is a collection of verse plays suitable for rehearsed readings for church entertainments. The first part is for Christmas celebrations. It consists of seven poems about Christmas, six soliloquies by the major characters in the Advent Story, and a short play called Miracles. While the characters are the familiar ones, the things they say are not. The second part of the book is a Halloween play called All Hallow's Eve. Three couples have gone on October 31 to close down a summer cottage. They are caught by a storm that knocks out the electricity. By candle light they tell ghost stories that start out being humorous but soon turn into theological arguments with a surprise ending. The plays can be presented without elaborate scenery or costuming. They have, however, also been used with a simple crèche for the Advent story, and homemade costumes for the Wise Men, shepherds, inn keeper, and Mary and Joseph. The book makes an ideal gift for people who like poetry and novel ways of looking at familiar stories.

Critically acclaimed by reviewers across the country, Aoibheann Sweeney's beautifully written debut novel is a story of the profound human need for intimacy. For Miranda, the adolescence spent in her fog-shrouded Maine home has been stark and isolated-alone with her troubled father, a man consumed with his work translating Ovid's Metamorphoses, her mother mysteriously gone from their lives. Now, having graduated from high school, Miranda's father arranges for her to stay with old friends in Manhattan, and she embarks on a journey that will open up her father's past and her own world, in ways she cannot begin to imagine.

Here is a collection of essays and commentaries on social, political and contemporary issues written with a tinge of euphuistic, witty, and imaginative aplomb. The topics range from politics, government, war and conflict to poverty, religion, racism and marriage. The book raises some pertinent and interesting questions and attempts to answer them from an insightful, contemplative, and commonsensical standpoint. Who created God? Do God and Jesus come from the same place? Is America's demise near? Why has Osama Bin Laden vowed to destroy America? Why may he succeed? What motivates the terrorist? Is marriage a good thing? What makes a marriage work? Why has the rest of the world allowed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to fester? Why does peace remain elusive to the world? Who gains from war and conflict? What is the solution to the problem of poverty? Why do we have poor people? Why are people racist? Why are people stupid? Why do people hate each other? Have governments augured well for People? Is Democracy truly the answer? Why is there so much bitterness and rancor in the world? And much more! The book is loaded with ideas and notions intended to give vent to the contemplative mind and lift the closed and narrow minded out from the morass of age-old institutional thinking.
