Excerpt from The American Gardener's Magazine and Register, Vol. 1: Of Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Horticulture and Rural Affairs These are, however, but a few of the subjects treated of, and which constitute only a small part of the original contributions. In the next Volume it is intended to give more engravings, particularly plans of some of the best green-houses, accompanied, perhaps, in some instances, with the expense attending the erection of the same. These, we anticipate, will be of great value not only to gentlemen who wish to build, but to all our readers. The original Communications we intend shall be of the first character, and will treat of those subjects which are considered of the most importance, embracing every branch of horticulture. In the Review department we have promised aid, and such, we hope, as will enable us to do justice to any work we may have the pleasure of noticing. Under the head of Miscellaneous Intelligence will be collected together, notices of the progress of horticulture in England, France, Germany, &c.; and also all items of information which may be interesting to the lover of gardening. Great attention will be given to the literary character of the work. We might enlarge upon the objects of our Magazine, and point out many benefits, which, we believe, it has been instrumental in bringing about; but we have already extended our limits. It is a source of the highest gratification to know that our zeal to disseminate a taste for gardening pursuits, has not been unattended with favourable results. Pursuing the study of Horticulture as much from inclination as from interest, it will be our greatest ambition to promote its advancement, in a high degree; and a consciousness that we are imparting knowledge and pleasure to any class of individuals, will cause us to continue our exertions with renewed vigor. To our friends who have so liberally favored us with communications, we return our humble, heartfelt, thanks; their kindness will long be remembered: we earnestly solicit them to continue their valuable assistance. Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1859, Vol. 25 The year just passed has not been signalized by that general enthusiasm in regard to horticultural progress which had marked those which preceded it. The depression of trade and manufactures throughout the country has had a sensible effect upon the cultivation of the arts and sciences, and more especially upon that science which contributes in so great a degree to the luxuries, rather than the necessities, of life. Not only do such derangements in the commercial world affect the pecuniary means of the people, and compel them to cut off the expenditure of their resources in the completion of beautiful gardens and grounds, but they absorb so much of their attention that, for a time, all the pleasures arising from their possession are neglected or forgotten, and the latent taste, just being developed, is lost, perhaps, not again to be renewed. Such, to a certain extent, has been the case the past year; but few beautiful suburban dwellings have been erected, few fine gardens laid out, few greenhouses and graperies constructed, and few grounds richly ornamented and planted, compared with preceding years; and though the year closed with more interest in horticulture than it opened, there has not been that zeal and real interest prevalent which the ardent lover of rural improvement could wish to record. All this, however, we trust is but transient, to be followed with a revival of business everywhere, with a deeper interest in horticultural advancement than our country has yet witnessed.
