Begun in 2014, Njideka Akunyili Crosby's ongoing series, The Beautyful Ones is comprised of portraits of Nigerian children, including members of the artist's family, derived from personal photographs and, more recently, from images taken during her frequent visits to Nigeria, where Akunyili Crosby lived until the age of sixteen. Its title is taken from the 1968 novel by the Ghanaian writer Ayi Kwei Armah, The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born, a book whose influence endured during the artist's adolescence in the 1990s and is still felt today. In it, the author laments the lost idealism of a generation in the 1960s for a better Africa, post-independence.In, The Beautyful Ones the artist reinstates this optimism in her own and subsequent generations while offering a powerful perspective on the complexities of a contemporary diasporic experience.Crosby is one of the most distinctive voices of her generation, and this book, only the second publication on the Los-Angeles based artist. It features extensive illustrations of works in the series and an essay by Siddhartha Mitter, who, reflecting on the work's complex history, weaves together the social, cultural, personal and political strands of its making.Published on the occasion of the exhibition, Njideka Akunyili Crosby: The Beautyful Ones at Victoria Miro, Venice (8 May - 13 July 2019).

Tony Conrad (1940-2016) was a pioneering American avant-garde video artist, experimental filmmaker, musician, composer, sound artist, teacher, and writer.Throughout his six-decade career he forged a unique path through numerous artistic movements and defined a vast range of culture, including rock music and public access television. In music, Conrad was an early member of the Theatre of Eternal Music (The Dream Syndicate), which included John Cale and La Monte Young. In the early 1960s he was also influential in the origins of the iconic band, The Velvet Underground. In film, Conrad was associated with the Structuralist movement which included filmmakers such as Paul Sharits and Hollis Frampton. This richly illustrated catalogue offers an in-depth introduction to Conrad's life and career: presenting his early Structuralist films projects in which he treated film as a sculptural and performative material; his Invented Acoustical Tools which presented as sculptures themselves; the ambitious films about power relations, set in the military and in prison; and his final sculptures and installations, which evoke and critique what he perceived as an emerging culture of surveillance, control, and containment. This book also includes Conrad's own writings writings from 1966 to 2016, as well as texts by curators, theorists and notable artists such as Tony Oursler, Christopher Müller, and Christopher Williams.Accompanying the exhibition, Introducing Tony Conrad: A Retrospective at Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York (2018), MIT List Visual Arts Center and Carpenter Center for Visual Arts, Harvard University (2018/2019), and ICA, University of Pennsylvania (2019).

Zanele Muholi: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness features over ninety of Muholi's evocative self-portraits, each image drafted from material props in Muholi's immediate environment. These portraits reflect the journey, self-image, and possibilities of a black woman in today's global society. For more than a decade, Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner devoted their lives to each other, serving in turn as muse, critic, companion, lover, friend and alter ego. Their romance was stormy - their raucous arguments are the stuff of legend - but their talents were prodigious. This book is packed with examples of the contributions both artists made to the world of modern art. Readers will learn how Pollock and Krasners artistry evolved and how they influenced each others success. Recent developments, such as a revealing biopic and the art worlds elevation of Pollock to the status of being the most expensive artist in the world, bring their portrait fully up-to-date. While the author acknowledges historys sensationalisation of their lives, it is the paintings themselves - revolutionary, innovative and daring - that tell the most compelling story.
