From the Muslims' to the Crusaders' conquest Jerusalem is among the world's best known cities. Its most outstanding and constant feature is its shared holiness by three major confessions (Muslim, Jewish and Christian). Covering the Marwanid, the Abbasid, and the Faimid phase, this study describes not only the emergence of conceptions with which the three major confessions share this city, but also their interactions as well as the political circumstances and religious axioms which give each conception its specific shape. Looking for these conceptions of the holy area of the city the Haram has been chosen. This area of the former temple was highly significant to all three confessions. The analysis is based on a careful description of the Haram (focusing on topics like names and traditions, architecture, rituals and customs, visions and dreams), and on the establishment of as many parallels as possible. "The result is a volume of astonishing depth and comprehensiveness [] As a compendium of sources it is unrivalled." Journal of Palestine Studies "The excellent graphics added to each section, culminating in 103 figures, deserve special mention. Also impressive is Kaplony's generous handling of space; it seems that he was aiming for the display of all the texts available to him. [] taking into account Kaplony's treatment of the subject, one is tempted to compare it with that of the precision and care of Swiss watchmakers. Unless new sources come to light, which is not very likely, this book will be the standard work for many years to come." Jerusalem Studies in Arabic and Islam "This book is an excellent contribution to the growing literature on Islamic Jerusalem, and it will indubitably be of interest to scholars and students of medieval Islamic history." International Journal of Middle East Studies.

"The world is a finite body, and therefore has finite power." John Philoponus is remembered for using this Aristotelian premise to break ranks with Aristotle and argue that the world is not everlasting. This investigation reconsiders Philoponus’s arguments from finite power, and then explores the aftermath of this line of thinking in the works of three lesser-known Arabic intellectuals active in the generation before Avicenna (d. 1037): Abū l-Ḫayr Ibn Suwār (d. after 1017), Abū al-Ḥasan al-ʿĀmirī (d. 992), and Abū Sahl al-Masīḥī (d. after 1025). Each engaged with this dictum in unique and novel ways, and in so doing anticipated a number of central features of Avicenna’s writings. The history of this argument is of crucial importance for understanding the evolution of natural philosophy and metaphysics in this formative period, away from tedious and simplistic arguments about creation and towards a more robust modal ontology based on intrinsic and extrinsic necessity.

Verbal Festivity in Arabic and Other Semitic Languages" edited by Lutz Edzard and Stephan Guth deals with one of the most essential and fascinating, though still much neglected aspects of Middle Eastern culture(s) - politeness and the ways it can be expressed or encoded in language. The contributions to the Proceedings of a workshop held in Bonn in 2009 attempt to shed spotlights on several aspects of Verbal Festivity. They include a comparative approach (English-German-Arabic) to the cultural concepts of "politeness", "Hoflichkeit", and "adab" in general (Stephan Guth); a survey of everyday-life polite formulae and expressions of courtesy in Palestinian Arabic (Avihai Shivtiel); a study of the morphological patterns of Arabic formulaic terminology itself (Pierre Larcher); a linguistic analysis of how the wish, or intention, to fulfill ethical duties or prescriptions is expressed in some neo-Aramaic dialects (Geoffrey Khan); a comparative investigation, covering several Semitic languages, of how to remain polite through suppressing explicit mentioning of the negative consequences the addressee will face if he does not comply with the speaker's suggestions (Lutz Edzard); and an analysis of formulae used in commercial documents at a 13th century Red Sea port (Andreas Kaplony).
