Agricultural terracing is intrinsically intertwined with the overall livelihoods, and living style and situation of people. This is most distinctly so in highlands of predominantly agricultural regions and countries. In many important ways, in the similar vein, the processes and patterns of sustained growth and development in human settlements, such as the rural settings in particular, have very strong linkages with agricultural terrace systems. Clearly, therefore, the need for and importance of improved and sustainable management of, and hence a better understanding about, these systems have been persistently growing. Besides technical and financial backing, a thorough understanding of and due consideration to the location and people are crucial. Only then, achieving the aims and ambitions of any conservation program would be possible. Being a brief yet balanced account of various vital aspects of agricultural terracing, this book should be of considerable interest and use to everyone concerned with using the land and preventing its degradation. However, its extensive readership may mostly comprise planners, policymakers, professional as well as student researchers, teachers and students of agriculture and forestry, agriculturists, silviculturists, pedologists, extension workers, environmentalists, conservationists, nature lovers, tourism promoters, resort managers, landscape architects and some farmers.

This book points out that because many natural and cultural features are public goods, with limited markets and hazy property rights, public policies are needed to strike the delicate balance between supply and demand.

For the past 50 years, the main goal of agriculture has been to increase production at any price, using high amounts of fertilizers and pesticides and intensive industrial methods. This has caused damage to the environment and widespread rural depopulation. This study shows that there is a viable alternative - a form of agriculture which conserves resources, maintains rural employment and minimizes the external costs, without loss of productivity. Using case studies from industrialized and developing countries, the author describes the new technical, institutional and policy options available.

Living Terraces is both an ethnographic and historical account of the terraces of Konso in southern Ethiopia. Terraced agricultural landscapes in Africa are remarkable feats of human engineering and social organization, enabling the conservation of soil and water and the cultivation of food. Indigenous terraced landscapes are all the morevaluable because they have been produced by the people themselves and maintained for several hundred years, evidencing a valuable degree of sustainability. Yet until this book, there have been few accounts of how such landscapesin Africa are produced and maintained over time. Taking a period of approximately a hundred years, Living Terraces is both an ethnography and history of the terraces of Konso in southern Ethiopia. It traces the way Konso agriculture and landscape has been produced and managed in close relationship with broader changes in Konso political and cultural lives. In shedding new light on the relationships between landscapes, livelihoods, culture and development, the book demonstrates the embeddedness of social institutions in areas of social, cultural, religious and political life, showing that social institutions cannot easily be abstracted, replicated or used instrumentallyfor development purposes. The result is a call for an approach to social institutions, so vital to development, which centralizes a study of culture, history and power in the analysis. ELIZABETH E.
