Interrupting Capitalism traces the history of Catholic thinking about economic life from the perspective of a "theology of interruption." The church's social teaching provides a way for Christians to interrupt capitalism, to live out economic life faithfully in the midst of the global economy.

What is African theology? What are its distinctive traits and characteristics, modes of investigation, and style of expression? Can African theology reach wider and run deeper than simple propositional articulation? What concerns and special circumstances have shaped its outlook? What unique burdens or hurdles imposed by the past must African theology surmount? What challenges and opportunities lie before it? What are African theology’s prospects? As a field of Christian engagement, is it condemned to be only an appendage to theology imported from the West and the North? Or does it have a distinctive contribution to make and gifts to share, not just within the continent of Africa, but also with the Christian world at large? These questions exercise the mind and soul of the African church. A worthy capstone to a lifetime of service as a theologian, educator, and ecumenical leader, this volume offers John Samuel Pobee’s considered and mature reflections on issues he raised nearly forty years ago when he published Toward an African Theology.

In this magisterial volume Charles E. Curran surveys the historical development of Catholic moral theology in the United States from its 19th century roots to the present day. He begins by tracing the development of pre-Vatican II moral theology that, with the exception of social ethics, had the limited purpose of training future confessors to know what actions are sinful and the degree of sinfulness. Curran then explores and illuminates the post-Vatican II era with chapters on the effect of the Council on the scope and substance of moral theology, the impact of Humanae vitae, Pope Paul VI's encyclical condemning artificial contraception, fundamental moral theology, sexuality and marriage, bioethics, and social ethics. Curran's perspective is unique: For nearly 50 years, he has been a major influence on the development of the field and has witnessed first-hand the dramatic increase in the number and diversity of moral theologians in the academy and the Church. No one is more qualified to write this first and only comprehensive history of Catholic moral theology in the United States.

Pope John XXIII prayed that the Second Vatican Council would prove to be a new Pentecost. The articles gathered here appeared originally in a series solicited by and published in Theological Studies (September 2012 to March 2014). The purpose of the series was and remains threefold: - To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council - To help readers more fully appreciate its significance not only for the Catholic Church itself but also for the entire world whom the Church encounters in proclamation and reception of ongoing revelation - In their present form, to help readers worldwide engage both the conciliar documents themselves and scholarly reflections on them, all with a view to appropriating the reform envisioned by Pope John XXIII. Contributors: Stephen B. Bevans, SVD; Mary C. Boys, SNJM; Maryanne Confoy, RSC; Massimo Faggioli; Anne Hunt; Natalia Imperatori-Lee; Edward Kessler; Gerald O'Collins, SJ; John W. Nigel Zimmermann presents critical reflections from leading Catholic prelates and scholars on the significance of the Second Vatican Council fifty years after it began. These include two senior Cardinals, one of whom is the head of the Congregation of Bishops and the other a member of Pope Francis' new advisory body on reforming the Roman Curia, as well as Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy. Together with thinkers from North America, the UK, Rome and Australia, they take up key themes from the Conciliar documents and assess the reception of the Council half a century on from its inception. In doing so, they open up new avenues for thinking through the authentic witness and teaching of the most important ecclesiastical event of the twentieth century. These avenues include discussion of themes such as the liturgy, communio, the Council in its historical context, the role of the laity, communicating the Council in a social media world, and the task of mission in the future. This volume marks a turning point in the Council's reception in the wider Church.

This book illustrates how George Tyrrell‘s theological challenge to those who would take the church out of history was never effectively refuted, either at the time or since, and that the issues Tyrrell raised are still relevant and alive in the church today. In highlighting Tyrrell‘s liberation of theology from dogmatism, the current work describes why he was vilified by the Roman hierarchy, expelled from the Jesuits, and eventually excommunicated. Tyrrell‘s Ignatian-inspired, hope-filled theology should not be forgotten, not least because it sheds further light on another courageous and prophetic Jesuit, Pope Francis. In revisiting Tyrrell‘s Ignatian theology, this book celebrates the promise that Vatican II presents to the future church, namely, a universal call to holiness as embraced by Pope Francis.

Portrayed by MacIean’s magazine as a rogue Canadian diplomat in support of the youth opposition during the Arab spring in Syria, Dr. Bruce Mabley has written over a hundred texts on contemporary international political and diplomatic issues. Decorated by the French Republic (Palmes académiques), this former diplomat, professor and political philosopher has reunited a collection of compelling articles on current international questions: war in Ukraine, China’s growing empire, Israel and Palestine, Haiti, Turkey. Developments in the Americas include US– Canada relations, the Lima Group and Haiti. A progressive opponent of wokism, political boyarysme and traditional political elites, the book argues for an urgent recalibration and democratization of diplomatic theory and practice based on people-to-people links. Encouraging independence movements in Québec, Scotland and Catalonia, the book is also a plea for international education, empowerment and accountability in international policy development.
