The bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) is a special growth factor for the induction of new bone formation. Today, the extract of the BMP originating from bone tissue as well as genetically modified BMPs, particularly BMP-2 and -7, can be used. Though the BMP as an implant is as yet an unregistered drug or medical tool in Europe and the US, specialists are confident that it will obtain final government approval based on the results of clinical tests conducted on more than 3000 patients. This important book focuses mainly on the clinical BMP treatment of patients -- namely in orthopaedic cases (fractures, bone transplants, non-unions and pseudoarthroses), maxillofacial surgery (sinus lift before dental implantation), dental surgery (filling out of cavities) and spinal surgery (using a BMP implant instead of the patient's own bone).

Current clinical orthopedic practice requires practitioners to have extensive knowledge of a wide range of disciplines from molecular biology to bioengineering and from the application of new methods to the evaluation of outcome. The biomechanics of and biomaterials used in orthopedics have become increasingly important as the possibilities have increased to treat patients with foreign material introduced both as optimized osteosynthesis after trauma and as arthroplasties for joint diseases, sequelae of trauma or for tumor treatment. Furthermore, biomaterial substitutes are constantly being developed to replace missing tissue. Biomechanics and Biomaterials in Orthopedics provides an important update within this highly important field. Professor Dominique Poitout has collected a series of high-quality chapters by globally renowned researchers and clinicians. Under the auspices of the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT) and International Society of Orthopaedic and Traumatology Research (SIROT), this book now provides permanent and specific access to the considerable international knowledge in the field of locomotor system trauma and disease treatment using the novel bioengineering solutions. This book covers both basic concepts concerning biomaterials and biomechanics as well as their clinical application and the experience from everyday practical use. This book will be of great value to specialists in orthopedics and traumatology, while also provide an important basis for graduate and postgraduate learning.

The effects of the bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) family on bone formation are well documented, but the transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta ( isoforms are much less studied. The product of 20 years of study, Induction of Bone Formation in Primates: The Transforming Growth Factor- sums up editor Ugo Ripamonti's research into the osteogenic a

With its focus on industrial pharmaceutical research, written by international experts from the industry, this book fills in a gap in the existing literature. It reflects the combination of such pharmaceutical interests as drug delivery, drug targeting, quality and safety management, drug approval and regulation, patenting issues and biotechnology fundamentals. Thus it provides practitioners in pharmaceutical biotechnology with all the relevant information from the shelf. The first part offers a comprehensive survey and review of the rapidly increasing array of biopharmaceuticals derived from the molecular biological approaches now widely available. This is followed by an extra section devoted to the very critical patenting and drug regulation issues. The whole is rounded off by detailed monographs of biotechnologically developed drugs that are already on the market. With a foreword of by Robert Langer, Kenneth J Germeshausen Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2002, he received the Charles Stark Draper Prize, the highest recognition for an engineer. Professor Langer is member of all three national academies - the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Engineering, and the National Academy of Sciences: "The book attempts to provide a balanced view of the biotechnological industry and the number of experts from industry sharing their knowledge and experience with the audience gives the book an outstanding value. All contributors provide with each chapter an up-to-date review on key topics in pharmaceutical biotechnology. This work is not only a valuable tool for the industrial expert but also for all pharmacists and scientists from related areas who wish to work with biotech drugs."

This book focuses on the salient features of the biology of Bone Morphogenetic Proteins and the advances in our understanding of their structure and function and of downstream signaling, as well as their governance in systems biology from bone and dentin to kidney, cancer, diabetes, iron homeostasis and angiogenesis, including rare musculoskeletal disorders. BMPs, also referred to as growth and differentiation factors, are members of the TGF-beta superfamily and are highly conserved from fruit flies to mammals and are responsible for the formation of practically every organ during embryo development and involved in adult tissue injury and repair. BMPs establish their extracellular gradient by interacting with their respective antagonists and regulate their function through SMAD-dependent down-stream signaling effector genes. This volume is aimed at scientists and professionals dealing with metabolic disorders, nutrition, systems biology diseases, rare musculoskeletal conditions, and disorders related to iron metabolism, including anemia of chronic disease, hereditary hemochromatosis and beta thalassemia.
