Successful Cultivation Of Vegetables Is Hampered Due To The Incidence Of Several Insect Pests, Diseases And Nematodes. Pest Management In Vegetables In South Asia Is A Very Complex Issue In View Of The Sub-Tropical Climate, Intensive Cultivation Of High Yielding Varieties/Hybrids Under High Fertigation, Off-Season Production, Lack Of Adequate Knowledge On Plant Nutrition And Protection, Economic Constraints To Maximize Qualitative Returns And Inability To Afford Risk. A Total Of 65 Million Mt As Pre-Harvest Losses In Vegetables Due To Diseases Alone In The World Have Been Estimated That Accounts For 10.5%. Many Ipm Technologies Using Trap Crops, Botanicals And Bioagents Have Been Developed In Some Vegetables And A Few Are Validated In Farmers Field. The Information On Pests, Diseases And Nematodes On Vegetable Crops Is Very Much Scattered. There Is No Book At Present Which Comprehensively And Exclusively Deals With The Above Aspects On Vegetable Crops. India Is The Second Largest Producer Of Fruits Next Only To China Contributing 10.9% Of The Total World Production. Total Production Of Fruits Has Been Estimated At 55.355 Million Tonnes From 5.323 Million Ha. India Is The Largest Producer Of Mango, Banana And Papaya. In Grapes, India Has Recorded The Highest Productivity Per Unit Area (25.4 Tonnes/Ha) In The World. Fruits Are Amongst The Most Cherished Bounties Of Nature. They Are The Major Sources Of Vitamins 'A' And 'C' And Minerals Like Calcium And Iron. Fresh Fruits Have Low Calorific Values And Are Low In Fats. The Present Area Under Fruit Crops Is Estimated To Be About 4.964 Million Hectares With An Estimated Production Of 49.295 Million Tonnes. Of The Several Factors Responsible For Lower Productivity Of Fruits, Nematode Parasites Constitute An Important Limiting Factor. The Present Volume Deals With Pests (Insects, Mites, Vertebrates And Nematodes) And Diseases (Fungal, Bacterial And Viral/Phytoplasma) Of Fruit Crops (Tropical, Sub-Tropical, Temperate And Semi-Arid) And Their Management Using Regulatory, Physical, Cultural, Chemical, Biological, Host Resistance And Integrated Methods.

The use of synthetic pesticides has undoubtedly resulted in the achievement of increased crop production. However, in recent times, there has been a considerable pressure on consumers and farmers to reduce or eliminate the use of synthetic pesticides in horticulture, since fruits and vegetables are consumed afresh. This concern has encouraged looking for better alternatives which are cheaper and eco-friendly than synthetic pesticides. It is well known that plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) play an important role in maintaining crop and soil health through versatile mechanisms. There are two main outcomes or effects from beneficial microorganisms: enhanced plant growth and crop protection, both of which represent the two main constraints to agriculture. The information on biomanagement of pests (insect and nematode pests, fungal, bacterial and viral/phytoplasma diseases) of horticultural crops (fruits, vegetables, plantation, spice, tuber, ornamental, medicinal and aromatic crops) using PGPR is very much scattered. There is no book at present which comprehensively and exclusively deals with the above aspects on horticultural crops. The present book deals with biomanagement of pests in horticultural crops in detail using PGPR. The present book deals with biomanagement of pests in horticultural crops in detail using PGPR. The present book is divided into six sections. The first section deals with the importance of PGPR including introduction, potential role of PGPR in agriculture, genera of PGPR, disease management, nematode management, insect pest management, integrated pest management, mechanism of biocontrol, mass production, formulation, delivery and commercialization. Pest management in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate fruit crops is dealt in Section II. The third section deals with pest management in Solanaceous, bulbous, Malvaceous, Cruciferous, Leguminous, Cucurbitaceous, leafy and root and tuber vegetable crops. Pest management in plantation and spice crops is in Section IV. Section V deals with pest management in ornamental, medicinal and aromatic crops. The last section deals with a road map ahead including challenges, future prospective and conclusions. The book is extensively illustrated with excellent quality photographs enhancing the quality of publication. The book is written in lucid style, easy to understand language along with adoptable recommendations involving eco-friendly components of IPM.

This fourth volume of this 4-volume set discusses the key diseases, typical symptoms, and management strategies of several economically important plants. Each chapter presents an introduction along with a detailed account of symptoms, causal organisms, disease cycles, epidemiology, and management of a selection of major plantation crops, medicinal crops, and mushrooms. The book features chapters contributed by eminent professionals in the field, who have incorporated their own experience and knowledge along with an overview of the recent developments in their fields. They provide information on the diagnostic tools and management techniques needed for such plantation crops as areca nut (or betel nut), cocoa (or chocolate), coconut, coffee, and tea; such medicinal crops as isabgol and senna; along with several kinds of mushrooms. The volume also includes photographs that show symptoms of important diseases, which are helpful in disease diagnosis. The volumes provide an abundance of information for understanding and managing plant diseases, with emphasis on diagnostic techniques. The collection includes: Volume 1: Fruit Crops Volume 2: Vegetable Crops Volume 3: Ornamental Plants and Spice Crops Volume 4: Important Plantation Crops, Medicinal Crops, and Mushrooms

This new book on the sustainable management of insect pests in important vegetables offers valuable management strategies in detail. It focuses on eco-friendly technology and approaches to mitigating the damage caused by insect pests with special reference to newer insecticides. Chapters in the volume provide an introduction to vegetable entomology and go on to present a plethora of research on sustainable eco-friendly pest management strategies for root vegetables, spice crops, tuber crops, and more. Vegetable crops that are infested by several insect pests from the nursery to the harvesting stage cause enormous crop losses. Given that it is estimated that up to 40 percent of global crops are lost to agricultural pests each year, new research on effective management strategies is vital. The valuable information provided in this book will be very helpful for faculty and advanced-level students, scientists and researchers, policymakers, and others involved in pest management for vegetable crops.
