The papers collected in this volume were first presented at the 14th International Conference on English Historical Linguistics (Bergamo, 2006). This volume offers a selection of papers from the Eleventh International Conference on English Historical Linguistics held at the University of Santiago de Compostela. Forbid, for example, was once followed by that-clauses, while in contemporary English it is in usual cases followed by to-infinitives except in the fixed form God forbid that ...
