This book presents the most recent advances on testing and experimentation in civil engineering, especially in the branches of materials, structures, and buildings, complementing the authors’ publication Advances on Testing and Experimentation in Civil Engineering - Geotechnics, Transportation, Hydraulics and Natural Resources. It includes advances in physical modelling, monitoring techniques, data acquisition and analysis, and provides an invaluable contribution to the installation of new civil engineering experimental facilities. The first part of the book covers the latest advances in the testing and experimentation of key domains of materials, such as bio-cementation and self-healing, durability, and recycled materials, as well as the new environmental requirements related to the presence of hazardous substances in construction materials. Furthermore, laboratory and in situ tests, together with equipment needed to estimate the behaviour and durability of construction materials are presented, updating the most important technological advances. The second part of the book highlights the relevance of testing and monitoring in structures, including in situ tests related to static load tests, dynamic tests, and long-term monitoring strategies, as well as laboratory tests of adhesive joints. Experimental tests on shake tables and blast-resistant structures are also described. Recent applications of drone technologies for the inspection and monitoring of civil structures are another important theme developed. Finally, in its third part, the book presents new developments in the characterisation of building testing, with the support of modelling, to assess building pathology and new requirements, acoustic comfort, fire safety, visual comfort, and energy consumption.

New engineering materials, techniques and applications are constantly being researched and developed, and keeping up to speed with the latest advances is crucial for engineers if they are to successfully address the challenges they face in their work. This book presents the selected proceedings of MMSE2023, the 9th International Conference on Advances in Machinery, Materials Science and Engineering Applications, jointly organized by the SAE-Supmeca, France and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and held on 22 and 23 July 2023 in Wuhan, China. For the past 12 years, this annual conference has collated recent advances and experiences, identified emerging trends and provided a platform for participants from academia and industry to exchange information and views, helping to address the world’s machinery and engineering challenges. The book contains 4 sections: mechanical engineering, material science and manufacturing technology; electrical engineering, automation and control; modeling, simulation and optimization techniques in engineering; and advanced engineering technologies and applications. A total of 241 submissions were received for MMSE2023, of which 151 papers were selected for the conference and for publication by means of a rigorous international peer-review process. These papers present exciting ideas and methods that will open novel research directions for different communities. Offering a current overview of the latest research and applications in machinery and materials-science engineering, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

This chapter aims to understand and analyze the failure mechanism of Steel Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (SFRC). Fiberreinforced Concrete (FRC) [ACI 116, 2000], Plain concrete fails in a brittle manner at the occurrence of cracking. Ductile fibers in FRC continue to carry stresses well beyond cracking, thus maintaining the structural integrity. The types of fibers using in FRC are Metallic (high-modulus) fibers and Nonmetallic (low-modulus). The metallic fibers to improve the flexural toughness and ductility of concrete for example: Steel, Carbon, and Glass. The Non-metallic (low-modulus) fibers enhance the fresh concrete properties and reduces the plastic-shrinkage cracking. Polypropylene, Cellulose, Nylon, Polyester. The steel fiber adding in to the concrete is called as steel Fiber Reinforced (SFRC) concrete. The SFRC is widely used in structure where fibre reinforcement is not essential for integrity and safety. For example: slabs on grade, rock slope stabilization and repair. The SFRC as substitutes of the shear reinforcement in structures/members and these concepts to cover in many building codes
