F. T. Wallenberger This book serves as an introduction to advanced inorganic fibers and aims to support fundamental research, assist applied scientists and designers in industry, and facilitate materials science instruction in universities and colleges. Its three main sections deal with fibers which are derived from the vapor phase such as single crystal silicon whiskers or carbon nanotubes, from the liquid phase such as advanced glass and single crystal oxide fibers, and from solid precursor fibers such as carbon and ceramic fibers. Contents FIBERS FROM THE VAPOR, LIQUID AND SOLID PHASE 1.1 The most important phase isthe liquid phase 1.2 Afiber by any name isstill afiber 1.3 Biographic sketches ofthe authors 1.4 Acknowledgments CHAPTER 1 FIBERS FROM THE VAPOR, LIQUID AND SOLID PHASE F. T. Wallenberger The book describes advanced inorganic fibers, focuses on principles and concepts, analyzes experimental and commercial processes, and relates process variables to structures, structures tofiber properties and fiber properties to end-use performance. In principle, there are discontinuous or inherently short, and continuous or potentially endless, fibers. Short fibers range from asbestos fibers, which were described as early as 300 BC to carbon nanotubes which were discovered in 1991 [1] and have been fully described in 1999 [2].

Inorganic and Composite Fibers: Production, Properties, and Applications provides a comprehensive review on the development, production and application of modern inorganic and composite fibers. Particular emphasis is placed on current production processes, parameters and finishing and functionalization methods for improving their properties and the problems associated with the testing of fibers. Fibers covered include carbon, glass and basalt fibers, metal fibers, such as copper and steel, fibers coated with silver or gold, and nitinol. In addition to pure inorganic fibers, the book looks at organic fibers with a high level of inorganic content, such as cellulosic fibers. Including contributions from leading experts from universities, research institutes, and producing companies, this book assists materials scientists and engineers in the composites, automotive, textile and medical industries to more efficiently and effectively select fibers for a range of different applications areas. Presents a thorough introduction to inorganic fibers, such as carbon fiber and nanotubes, graphene, glass fibers, and many more, including the fundamentals of production, processing and finishing of each fiber type Includes coverage of a range of application areas of inorganic fibers to assist in product development Keeps researchers up-to-date by providing information on the latest developments in this field, thus supporting further research

Carbon Composites: Composites with Carbon Fibers, Nanofibers, and Nanotubes, Second Edition, provides the reader with information on a wide range of carbon fiber composites, including polymer-matrix, metal-matrix, carbon-matrix, ceramic-matrix and cement-matrix composites. In contrast to other books on composites, this work emphasizes materials rather than mechanics. This emphasis reflects the key role of materials science and engineering in the development of composite materials. The applications focus of the book covers both the developing range of structural applications for carbon fiber composites, including military and civil aircraft, automobiles and construction, and non-structural applications, including electromagnetic shielding, sensing/monitoring, vibration damping, energy storage, energy generation, and deicing. In addition to these new application areas, new material in this updated edition includes coverage of cement-matrix composites, carbon nanofibers, carbon matrix precursors, fiber surface treatment, nanocarbons, and hierarchical composites. An ideal source of information for senior undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals working with composite materials and carbon fibers, this book can be used both as a reference book and as a textbook. Introduces the entire spectrum of carbon fiber composites, including polymer-matrix, metal-matrix, carbon-matrix, ceramic-matrix and cement-matrix composites Systematically sets out the processing, properties, and applications of each type of material Emphasizes processing as the foundation of understanding, manufacturing, and designing with composite materials

Global population growth and tremendous economic development has brought us to the crossroads of long-term sustainability and risk of irreversible changes in the ecosystem. Energy efficient and ecofriendly technologies and systems are critically needed for further growth and sustainable development. While ceramic matrix composites were originally developed to overcome problems associated with the brittle nature of monolithic ceramics, today the composites can be tailored for customized purposes and offer energy efficient and ecofriendly applications, including aerospace, ground transportation, and power generation systems. The 9th International Conference on High Temperature Ceramic Matrix Composites (HTCMC 9) was held in Toronto, Canada, June 26-30, 2016 to discuss challenges and opportunities in manufacturing, commercialization, and applications for these important material systems. The Global Forum on Advanced Materials and Technologies for Sustainable Development (GFMAT 2016) was held in conjunction with HTCMC 9 to address key issues, challenges, and opportunities in a variety of advanced materials and technologies that are critically needed for sustainable societal development. This Ceramic Transactions volume contains a collection of peer reviewed papers from the 16 below symposia that were submitted from these two conferences Design and Development of Advanced Ceramic Fibers, Interfaces, and Interphases in Composites- A Symposium in Honor of Professor Roger Naslain Innovative Design, Advanced Processing, and Manufacturing Technologies Materials for Extreme Environments: Ultrahigh Temperature Ceramics (UHTCs) and Nano-laminated Ternary Carbides and Nitrides (MAX Phases) Polymer Derived Ceramics and Composites Advanced Thermal and Environmental Barrier Coatings: Processing, Properties, and Applications Thermomechanical Behavior and Performance of Composites Ceramic Integration and Additive Manufacturing Technologies Component Testing and Evaluation of Composites CMC Applications in Transportation and Industrial Systems Powder Processing Innovation and Technologies for Advanced Materials and Sustainable Development Novel, Green, and Strategic Processing and Manufacturing Technologies Ceramics for Sustainable Infrastructure: Geopolymers and Sustainable Composites Advanced Materials, Technologies, and Devices for Electro-optical and Medical Applications Porous Ceramics for Advanced Applications Through Innovative Processing Multifunctional Coatings for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Applications

Focusing on basic aspects of future reusable space transportation systems and covering overall design, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, flight dynamics, propulsion, materials, and structures, this report presents some of the most recent results obtained in these disciplines. The authors are members of three Collaborative Research Centers in Aachen, Munich and Stuttgart concerned with hypersonic vehicles. A major part of the research presented here deals with experimental and numerical aerodynamic topics ranging from low speed to hypersonic flow past the external configuration and through inlet and nozzle. Mathematicians and engineers jointly worked on aspects of flight mechanics like trajectory optimization, stability, control and flying qualities. Structural research and development was predominantly coupled to the needs for high temperature resistant structures for space vehicles.
