Excerpt from Addresses, Speeches, Lectures, and Letters Upon Various Subjects The Addresses, Speeches, Lectures, etc., etc., which appear in this volume have been selected from many others, and are intended to be preserved in this form, for the use of those who, years hence, may be interested in what is substantially a record of my feelings and views upon important subjects in very interesting periods of our national history. The addresses delivered at Fort Wayne, Ind., in 1861 and 1865 can hardly fail, at any time, to be interesting, as the present the prevailing sentiment of the people of the Northern States at the commencement and the close of the civil war. The letters, which were written in London for the New York Tribune, were copied by a great many newspapers, and very widely circulated and favorably commented upon in all parts of the country. They were written and the Cambridge lectures were delivered when financial and economic questions were engaging public attention - questions that have lost none of their interest - the definite solution of which seems to be far in the future. The Currency. Upon the currency question I have spoken at considerable length, because it was, and still is, a question of supreme importance. A sound circulating medium is the life-blood of commercial nations. In speaking of the currency, I could not fail to express my views upon the legal-tender notes. Excerpt from Speeches, Lectures and Letters These Speeches and Lectures have been collected into a volume at the earnest and repeated requests of the personal friends and the followers of Mr. Phillips. In committing them to the Publisher, he wrote: - "I send you about one half of my speeches which have been reported during the last ten years. Put them into a volume, if you think it worth while. Four or five of them ('Idols, ' 'The Election, ' 'Mobs and Education, ' 'Disunion, ' 'Progress, ') were delivered in such circumstances as made it proper I should set down beforehand, substantially, what I had to say. The preservation of the rest you owe to phonography; and most of them to the unequalled skill and accuracy, which almost every New England speaker living can attest, of my friend, J. M. W. Yerrinton. The first speech, relating to the murder of Lovejoy, was reported by B. F. Hallett, Esq. As these reports were made for some daily or weekly paper, I had little time for correction. Giving them such verbal revision as the interval allowed, I left the substance and shape unchanged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Speeches and Addresses Intemperate as such language is, it is but little more so than the abuse to which he was subjected in consequence of his speech on the subject of temperance, a speech which was generally mis understood and generally misquoted. I have, therefore, included several speeches and one letter on this subject, in order that his attitude towards the question of temperance may be clearly under stood. He himself, in a letter to the Times, ex plained both what he had and what he had not said on that occasion, but inasmuch as this explanation seems to me unnecessary when the words them selves are correctly given and given with their context, I have left the speech to speak for itself. Excerpt from Speeches and Addresses: Political, Literary and Religious Many of my friends have asked me to publish in the more permanent form of a book some of the speeches and addresses that I have had the honour of making before a great variety of audiences during my career. This request I gladly comply with, and I use the first break in a life-long series of pressing business and political engagements to prepare the book for publication. While a man makes many enemies by frankly speaking his mind, as it has been my principle and my habit to do, he makes many friends also; and I certainly have every reason to be thankful both for the number and for the constancy of my friends. Speaking, as I have done, on many subjects, and in support of many causes, I could not hope to carry with me in all things those who agreed with me in many things; but among those whose good opinion I valued, there have been few who were not willing to believe that I was no less candid when I differed from them than when I happened to express opinions that they cherished.
