Excerpt from Address of Hon. William H. Haywood, Jr.: To the People of North Carolina Fortunately for me, those Opinions, so far as they looked forward to its ultimate consequences, on the harmony of the paity, or the welfare of the Republic, I am no longer under the necessity of supporting by labored argu ments. For good or evil, the law has passed. If it should be repealed3 or modified at the next session, that will be of itself a complete vindication of myopposition to it at the present. If it should be permitted to remain infor'ce in the form that I was required to vote upon it, then time will soon determine whether my opinion of it was right or wrong. I abi'de the result Without fear; yet, if I know myself, without a wish to see evil. Come of it, merely for the sake of claim ing hereafter, on my part, the merit of political sagacity for my resistance to it. Excerpt from An Address to the People of North Carolina, on the Evils of Slavery Nor will doctrine of the injustice of absolute slavery lose any of its real weight by the considera tion of its having the sanction of the Law, if we consider that all men are but 'subordinate beings, who are held bound to obey their Creator accor ding to his own Laws, which he hath ordained, and by which he designs his creatures to be gover ned, among which that denominated the Law of nature (which is nevertheless a divine Law) may and ought to be regarded as having been instituted for the particular purpose to which we now apply it, and to which it has been applied by men of. Sound judgment and uncorrupted principles in every age; and to which it was particularly applied by the Fa thers of our glorious liberty, as they have abundant ly shown.* Nor dare any one doubt the validity of the Law of nature, any more than the right of its AI mighty giver to a primary part in the government of mankind. It follows consequently that the principles set forth in the Law of nature for the government of mankind are primary or constitutional principles, and that the Laws enacted by men for their own government should harmonize with and acquiesce in them. Excerpt from Address Before the Literary Societies of University of North Carolina You come, not to hear me, but the annual proclamation that the young men of another class, full of hope and prom ise of future usefulness and honors, have been armed with the helmet of knowledge, the shield of morality, the spear of incisive thought and the glistening and untarnished sword of honor, ready to enlist in the army of the world's workers. The sight of these scenes, the first time since graduation, is one of mixed sadness and pleasure; the commingling of the things of the past and present and the thoughts of the dead and living; so many of the professors, students and villagers whom I knew so well and regarded so highly have been translated to the Temple not made with hands, yet how charming to meet, after long separation, the living friends of one's youth, to stroll over this lovely campus under its majestic oaks, and through the buildings, libraries and balls, once the home of your youth, awakening most delightful reminiscences of that ever hopeful age. I truly envy those whose precious privilege it is to make an annual pilgrimage to the shrine of their alma mater. Where they can quaff the refreshing nectar of the fountain of youth; where they can breathe the pure scholastic air, and thus clarify the moral and political malaria so often sur rounding us in the concrete thoughts of practical life where they can renew their devotion in all its freshness to litera ture for its own pure sake, which is in constant danger of being killed by the spirit of the world, or smothered in the stifling atmosphere of an exclusively business life. They go hence stronger and better men. It is not time lost. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Address of the People of South Carolina Assembled in Convention, to the People of the Slaveholding States of the United States The one great evil, from which all other evils have flow ed, is the overthrow of the Constitution of the United States. The Government of the United States, is no longer the Government of Confederated Republics, but of a consolidated Democracy. It is no longer a free Govern ment, but a Despotism. It is, in fact, such a Government as Great Britain attempted to set over our Fathers;/ and which was resisted and defeated by a seven years' struggle for independence.
