This report presents a cost analysis of Powdered Activated Carbon production from coal. In the process under analysis, Activated Carbon is produced via a typical steam activation process. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): (1) "Carbon, Activated", Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, 5th edition (2) "Carbon, 5. Activated Carbon", Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 2010 Keywords: Steam Activated Process, Carbonization, Activated Charcoal, Activated Coal, Carbo Activatus

This report presents a cost analysis of Powdered Activated Carbon production from coconut shell. In the process examined, the coconut shells are crushed and then carbonized into a charcoal, which is activated by steam at high temperatures. The Activated Carbon is cooled and ground into powder of specified mesh size. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): (1) "Carbon, Activated", Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, 5th edition (2) "Carbon, 5. Activated Carbon", Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 2010 Keywords: Steam Activated Process, Carbonization, Activated Charcoal, Activated Coal, Carbo Activatus

This report was designed to establish the technical and economic viability to produce activated carbon from anthracite. Previous work at the bench scale had shown that activated carbon with very high surface areas could be obtained in a one-step process, with gas produced simultaneously suitable for power generation. In this work, a fluidized bed pilot plant was constructed and operated to produce kilogram-sized samples allowing for detailed sample testing in end-use applications of the carbons and an economic evaluation of the process concept. The project reviewed recent technology for the production of activated carbons and market assessments for activated carbons and identified potential applications for the pilot plant material; assessed the Mount Klappen development and integrated the technology of activated carbon production into the plant development profile; acquired and prepared appropriate samples of Mount Klappen anthracite; designed and constructed an experimental pilot plant and carried out a series of pilot scale tests; assessed the activated carbon and gases produced and developed product application tests for specific product applications; and provided an engineering assessment and preliminary cost analysis for full scale activated carbon production within the Mount Klappen plant concept.

Activated Carbon Compendium provides a critical in-depth analysis of recent research into activated carbons, focussing on their wide-ranging applications, and the complexity and flexibility in their manufacture and use. Professor Harry Marsh has selected and reviewed 27 key papers originally published in Carbon over the last five years. The compendium represents an indispensable review of key work in the area. Areas include: The Activation Process, Modifications to Porosity, Properties of Activated carbons, Applications, Theoretical.

This new book presents design, cost, and performance information on the application of GAC in drinking water, including the use of GAC both in the U.S. and overseas. Various design concepts for the unit operations that make up the GAC process are presented in 11 comprehensive, complete chapters, including a special chapter that provides cost equations and comparative cost studies for full scale application of GAC.
