The Six Decades of Acta Cytologica commemorates the past six decades of the journal, which coincide with the development of clinical cytology and its emergence as an independent discipline of modern medicine. This issue combines past, present, and future in an intriguing way. The most influential articles from each of the past six decades, published in previous issues of Acta Cytologica, have been reprinted in their original version. Each is accompanied by a commentary from a prominent expert in the respective field. This commentary summarizes the original article and its significance and describes its impact on the development of the discipline, and its role in increasing our understanding at a conceptual level. This publication is a tribute to the scientific and clinical work of the pioneering generation of cytologists and their successors, as well as an acknowledgement of the ever increasing complexity of the innovations made by the younger generation of professionals working in this field.

Advances in Clinical Cytology describes the ultrastructural dynamics of endometrial hyperplasia and neoplasia. This book contains 11 chapters that evaluate the meaning of endometrial aspiration in gynecological application and address the morphologic response of hyperplastic and neoplastic endometrium to exogenous progestogens. Some of the topics covered in the book are the evaluation of the methods of cytological sampling; population screening for cervical cancer; advances in pulmonary cytology; and selection of high-risk cases of cancer development for screening and collection of specimens. Other chapters deal with the evaluation of cytology as a method of screening, as well as the cytological features of human polyomavirus-infected cells. An analysis of the functional connections between epithelial cells is provided. The concluding chapters are devoted to the morphology of the cell surface and the method for staining smears. The book can provide useful information to doctors, cytologists, students, and researchers.

This book offers clear, up-to-date guidance on how to report cytologic findings in cervical, vaginal and anal samples in accordance with the 2014 Bethesda System Update. The new edition has been expanded and revised to take into account the advances and experience of the past decade. A new chapter has been added, the terminology and text have been updated, and various terminological and morphologic questions have been clarified. In addition, new images are included that reflect the experience gained with liquid-based cytology since the publication of the last edition in 2004. Among more than 300 images, some represent classic examples of an entity while others illustrate interpretative dilemmas, borderline cytomorphologic features or mimics of epithelial abnormalities. The Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology, with its user-friendly format, is a “must have” for pathologists, cytopathologists, pathology residents, cytotechnologists, and clinicians.

This atlas is the offspring of the “The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) State of the Science Conference,” hosted by the NCI and organized by Dr. Andrea Abati. Preparations for the conference began 18 months earlier with the designation of a steering committee and the establishment of a dedicated, p- manent web site. The meeting took place on October 22 and 23, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland and was co-moderated by Susan J. Mandel and Edmund S. Cibas. The discussions and conclusions regarding terminology and morphologic criteria 1, 2 from the meeting were summarized in publications by Baloch et al. and form the framework for this atlas. The atlas is organized by the general categories of “Nondiagnostic,” “Benign,” “Follicular Neoplasm/Suspicious for a Follicular Neoplasm”, “Suspicious for Malignancy,” and “Malignant,” and it includes the defi- tions and morphologic criteria of these categories as set forth by Baloch et al. The majority of the conference participants also agreed on a category of “undetermined significance,” which is incorporated in this atlas (Chap. 4). It is critical that the cytopathologist communicate thyroid FNA interpretations to the referring physician in terms that are succinct, unambiguous, and helpful clinically. We recognize that the terminology used here is a flexible framework that can be modified by individual laboratories to meet the needs of their providers and the patients they serve.

The new edition of Diagnostic Cytopathology provides the practicing and trainee cytopathologist with a comprehensive guide to the diagnostic applications of exfoliative and aspiration cytology. The book covers normal and abnormal cytological findings encountered in all body sites where cytological applications are used. Appropriate histopathological, immunohistochemical and molecular correlations, together with a consideration of the possible differential diagnoses, accompany the cytological findings. The reader can see a full range of normal and abnormal findings with almost 2,000 full-colour images. The book is heavily referenced to ensure that it will serve as a practical resource for daily reference in the laboratory. A uniformity of basic chapter structure will help readers to quickly find the diagnostic answers they seek. This edition stresses not just the diagnostic cytological features of the various conditions encountered, but also the diagnostic pitfalls and the grey areas between so as to enable the reader to give more evidence-based reports. In recognition of their rapid expansion, there are new chapters on recent technological developments and on the cytodiagnosis of childhood tumours. A special section on the importance of multidisciplinary team meetings that include the cytopathologist as a core member of the team has also been included at the end of each chapter. As active members of this team, cytopathologists can define their role in the management pathway and thus bring the patient and the microscope together as never before.
